05' Rear Shock Replacement???

Whats up all, been readin up on the forum for the past few weeks and came across a question that I cant remember the answer to....

Can I install an 08-09' Rear Shock onto an 05'?? What all would be involved in this swap...any major modifications?

My baby is currently running a strut with a 9" stretch. I cant stand the ride quality durring most riding conditions, but I totally dig the no "sag" when I twist my wrist!
