Got my baby back last night with new Pilot Sport HPX tires, took it out for some breakin warmup cycles and got in 86 miles before the sunset. This morning I get on to head to the office [Saturday! Yeah! GRRRRR!] and half way there while upshifting to forth or so,..... TINK! the shift goes up REAL HIGH above my foot. My first thought is: "Okay.... that seems odd... but surely it's just another false neutral and the lever is lost... I'll just clutch in and try to find the gear as usual.... [clutch in - move foot] hmmmmm loose as if it's not attached. Not good. Oh, I can make it to work in forth... naw... but stop lights and trying to start will be a wench. GAH! Gotta turn around and get teh car and order the part from work. Bummer". So, getting home was fun - yet stupid - starting in fouth [or is it fifth? I dunno WHERE it's sitting] from a dead stop, in traffic is a unique dance of clutch, revving and the occasianal bogging. But I got home with my shifter and linkage separated at the foot justa swinging in the breeze. Crap! Brand new tires and a BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!! I could probably buy some bolt from a hardware store, but I like the real parts. $60 + next day shipping
As a side note, and maybe someone can comment on this if you could.... previous to this, I felt like my tranny was shifting very harshly which I had attributed to crapped out Mobil1 oil. Well, the shop changed my oil with another synth and yet my tranny still shifts pretty clunkily... as if it's low on oil or something. My horrible riding style has be clutchless shifting about 85% of the time and it been abused on a track a couple times too. Do you think I have wore stuff out in my tranny that needs replaced? Is this how older, worn gears feel? Now I'm wondering if the shift linkage was too loose CAUSING the bad feel, CAUSING me to shift harder, CAUSING me to eventually brake the pin? Any thoughts? Anyone suffer from hard gears, or breaking linkages?
