I would love to do the 16 42 setup but dont want to step down in the front. I know a 17 on the front would be less likley to blow the teeth off than a 17
so what would be comparable to a 16 42
i was thinking 17 45

Yeah I think that's about right. 3 teeth in the back is the equivalent to one in the front. I may be wrong, but I believe if you go 17/45 you won't have enough chain. Someone else will chime in and tell you for sure.

There are plenty of bikes running 16t front with no problems. Unless you are putting out over 250 rwhp I don't think you need to be concerned. I run 16/44, BTW

unless you purchase a longer chain the 17/45 will not work plus even if you could stretch your chain around it you would loose over an inch of wheelbase so it would be very prone to wheelie, the 16/42 setup is proven to be streetable and very strong at the track. I have been thinking lately about going back to 16/40 to lower the RPMs on the highway, i run around 4400rpm at highway speeds and the extra vibration will make my hands knumb after a while. Good luck with whatever setup you choose.

I have a 16/42 on my stage 2 turbo setup...

I am changing with the first oil change to go 20/42, but haven't done it yet... I rode with a 16/40 setup for a loooooong time with absolutely no issues (no turbo). Just make sure you DON'T go with the aluminum sprockets and you will be fine...

(Aluminum sprockets tend to warp quick at the track under load....)

Kind of sucks to be cruising in 6th gear at 6K just trying to keep up with everyone though... gas mileage has gone down quit a bit too of course... Yea, she is going to be quick though with a 16/42...

I seen a chart on psycobike that shower the gear ratio's of alot of different setups the 17 45 is extremly close to the 16 42 but just slightly more. Im going to extended it anywas so ill have to buy a chain so ill just do everything at once and only have to buy and change one sprocket

here are a few samples of the gearing via the calculator...

here are stock 17/40...17/45...16/42 and 18/40...in that order

notice that 18T front make things a little interesting...kind of wonder what a healthy stock motor might due under the right conditions.
