One plastic dot (a hemisphere, actually) on 55 mph, and the other on 3,000 rpm.
When you're in 6th gear, the needles line up with the dots. When they don't line up, you'd be amazed how quickly your brain processes rpms and mphs relative to the dots to give you a pretty good idea of what gear you're in at the time.
