200 rear tire problem

I recently bought an 04 busa with 10,000 miles on it. It still had the original tire believe it or not. Needless to say it needed a new one bad. I had a new 200/50 Bridgestone bt14 so on it went. Now I seem to hear a clicking noise when I take off and I think it is the rear tire hitting the chain. Has anyone had this problem and should I be worried about it? I'm thinking maybe at higher speeds the tire narrows and the chain tightens so it's not rubbing. But I'm not sure because past about 25mph all I can hear is wind. Let me know what you think.

If you have a 200 rear on and the rear wheel isnt perfectly straight, it will hit the tire. If you are only hearing the noise at low speed then it is possible about what you said. Once you increase speed the tire gets narrower and stops hitting the chain. If the chain is hitting your tire though i think you would be able to see some evidence of that on the lip of the tire... I have a 190 on my bike and the chain is very close to the edge lip of the tread and sidewall, and i know my tire is on straight...

kind of peculier since the bt14 measures 198..

however , a friend put a 200 shinko <005> on his bike with a new arm. he had interference problems with the chain.

he put a 1/16 shim in and the the problem went away. since its a used bike you might want to check that gear alignment .

good luck.

Clean, lube, and adjust your chain

I have a 200 Pirelli on mine also. Check the alignment of the wheel and then take care of the chain.

I've got a new chain and sprockets on the way so I'll be re-checking everything in the next week or so. Possible try a shim if needed. Thanks for the info.

Update. I've spent the last 2 hours messing with my chain and rear tire. First question: is this normal. I have my bike on a rear stand, start it, put it in gear, let the bike idle and rear tire spin, the chain jump around alot and makes alot of racket, no matter if the chain is tight or loose. If not what could be causing this?

Another related question: How much should you be able to more your rear sprocket when everything is all tightened up? I can move mine side to side almost 1/4" with the chain on. The center of the sprocket and hub rotate a little on the wheel. Are those black rubber things inside getting wore out? they have groves in them about 1/8" deep. I noticed this because it is very hard to get my chain to stay a consistant tension. I get it adjusted and spin the wheel a few times and all of a sudden its really tight.

I'm listening, give me some suggestions.

Hey Abi the noise you are hearing when the bike is up on the rear stand is normal..
but this sounds like a wheel bearing going south as I had this happen to me at about 18,000 miles..Just something to think about...

I don't think it's a wheel bearing as I checked and greased those when I changed the tire. The wheel itself doesn't have any movement on the axle shaft just the hub that the sprocket is attached to.

Now that you eliminated the wheel bearings, I would replace the cush-drive (rubber triangles) that sit in the hub. But i dont see that as the problem, especially when you are complaining of clicking sounds..

I just wondered if the sprocket was moving enough allowing the chain to hit the tire causing the noise. How much do the new cush-drive things cost? Do any of the board vendors sell these or do I need to go to the dealership?

Clean and lube your chain and the "clicky noise" should change or go away. The rattle and chain jumping around while on the rear stand is normal

If your chain is REAL loose it will hit the side of the tire...usually will leave marks on the tire

it won't make any noise if it hits, just leave some scuff marks.

+1, clean and lube to see if that takes care of your noise.

Mine has the same 'play' in it.
