Up untll last week i had never heard of problems with 1st gen Busas 2ed gear. I read about it online last tuesday and thought nothing about it since i had been riding busas for 4 years now with no problems with either one. well, just my luck...on the way back from Bike Week Sunday, I opened her up WOT in 2ed gear. it jumped..almost as if the chain had jumped teeth. i pull over and check the chain and everything is good. so i go humm... maybe it was just a bump in the road. so i get back on and go WOT again in 2ed gear and it did it AGAIN. so now i'm thinking back to what i read last week and thinking "ooh crap". it ONLY does this in 2ed gear.

anyone else had/having this problem? looks like its going to cost close to $1500 to fix and i really dont have the money to have it fixed right now. i have a lot of long distance rides planned this summer. mostly to the beach and to the dragon and that area. question is... can i get through summer without having it fixed. can i just NOT open her up in 2ed gear, or just skip 2ed gear all together? i don't want to mess it up more then it is.. but i want to be able to at least ride.

what should i do? park it for more then likely rest of the year? or just limp it through the summer and not have to cancel the rides?

Thanks

I have the same problem since March, I have just been skipping 2nd gear altogether and have had no other problems... Me and a buddy are tearing it down Monday and getting it fixed. Been on several rides and use it as my daily driver and like I said, been skipping 2nd and no problems. :cheerleader:

It can be done for less money as well as a better tranny in the end.

I would have it under cut!

how would having it undercut help? would it just prevent it from happening again? would it hurt it to ride it until i fix it?

You riding an '06 or '07. I passed an '07 twice on Saturday. 2nd gear is a well known issue for the Gen I. John knows what he's talking about and undercutting 2nd is def the way to go if you tear into it.

Black '08, it's dark gray with a Brocks Pipe. I had my Brocks Performance Black Hoodie on the outside.

There is a member here parting out a bike, i would buy the tranny he is selling, send it to Fast By Gast, for undercutting!
While that is happening, ride it, just skip second.

its the 2nd and 6th gear "dog ears" and shift fork. what has happened is the "ears" have worn and the fork cant hold them together anymore. REPLACE the fork as well even if you cant see the bend in it. it HAS been compromised.

you could limp through to answer your question tho.

for what it is worth...while having the cases split...is it logical for tool steel shift shafts and a heavy duty output shaft? + replacing shift forks? some other options were the backcut of all gears up and down...how does that apply?

how would having it undercut help? YES, many HAPPY owners here have said so

would it just prevent it from happening again? NO, it is a FIX

would it hurt it to ride it until i fix it? NO, but puts a damper on riding as you have already experienced

My 07 also does the same, but only under real hard acceleration and not all the time. Mine I just found out doesn't do it if I do not let up on the shifter.... It's weird but it has not done it if I just keep the shifter up until I am ready for third.

If yours is only doing it with hard acceleration in second take it light in second..

I had a friend that bought a used V65 Sabre....2nd gear was bad when he bought it with 25k miles on it. He rode it for over 55k more miles before he sold it still running fine. He just skipped 2nd. He also broke 2nd on his gixxer 1100 and rode it that way for 25k or so miles before selling it still running great. You could theoretically ride your busa without 2nd gear forever and be fine. Its much easier to ride a big torquey bike without 2nd than a smaller or peakier engined bike. If you're just a cruiser you prolly won't even miss it.......but if you're into hard acceleration and keeping up with your buds it'll be a funsucker :banghead:
And all bikes can develop 2nd gear issues if abused when shifting......every brand forum has 2nd gear horror stories. The nuetral gap between 1st and second is the 2nd gear killer if abused with sloppy/poor shifting.
I've seen every brand at all diff mileages with 2nd gear issues. I knew a guy that let his friend borrow his brand new zx6R for a 30 minute ride, the bike came back with a bad second gear

No idea where your info comes from, but under cutting is the fix, hands down!

Definately go with the undercut option. My 05 went bad with 1800 miles on it and it was fixed under warranty. I sent the new gears out on my dime to Fast By Gast and had them undercut. Then a couple years later first gear went out. I split the cases myself and sent those two gears out. The rest of the gears looked fine. Definately replace the shift fork, and even consider replacing the shift drum.

Thanks for all the replies. looks like i will be having them undercut after the summer. I did a few 1st-3rd gear burnouts at Suck Bank Blow friday night, I'm sure that didn't help it any. :banghead:

Trying to go from 1st to 2nd during a burn-out is what broke my buds 2nd gear on his 1100.
