2nd bike / backup bike options

So I am looking for a second motorcycle. I would like It primarily to take down to the area like tail of the dragon. I would like to potentially maybe take it out for a track day so I want something. I won't be as upset if I lay it down. I don't mind taking my Hayabusa to tail the dragon. It's just not the perfect machine for there and I'd rather have a second bike that is more like a track bike that I could beat around and not care.
I've been looking at bikes like the fz1 or an fz-09. I debated doing a GSXR 750 or 1000, but I really would only like to spend about five grand so that limits my options a little bit and I don't want something super old either.

Any thoughts as to what kind of bikes that I should look into to suit this need?

A GSXR750 would be great for this......

Sometimes you can find a decent deal for $5k or so if you look really hard....

An '05 GSXR 1k was one of the best liter bikes made....you might be able to find one of those in your budget range....

I had a 2006 GSXR 1000 and I miss it...
Great bikes...

Even a decent 600 would be good on the Dragon and they are great on the track and might even meet your budget?

I think one of those ZX4RRs would be a lot of fun too......a person would probably flick one of those through the Dragon with vigor....

Why does age matter?
Modern electronics put most bikes out of your price range, and that is their only real update from older models.
You can find a great 1k from most any Japanese brand in the early to mid 2000's that will check all those boxes, full sport, or sport touring.
An FZ1 is a good bike too, I wouldn't mind owning a 15 year old one of those myself.
A GSXS1k, a Bandit 1200, CB919 Hornet, a ZX9, ZX11, ZX12, ZZR12, ZZR14...the list goes on, I can think of alot of good bikes in the $3K- $5K price range.
An FZ9 is a 3 cylinder with alot less power than most everything above, but lighter, and will not hold that $5k+ price that most of them go for.
Everything else listed above has a pretty consistent price range in the market, as they are tried and true bikes, known to last for many miles and years.

The problem I've seen with the 600's, and smaller engines, is long term dependibility.
Sure, you can have a great running and dependable, high mileage 600...but they are rare, and you will pay for them.
I will buy a 1k with 20k, or 50k+ miles and not think about it, if the price is right.
A 600...not so much.
Many a new and inexperienced rider had a 600, bounced them off the rev limiter in neutral, held them to redline in every gear regulary, and on the rev limiter, and I've seen many live a short life as a result.
15k, 20k miles, and they're ready to blow...and do, their smaller engine internals just can't take the abuse that bigger cc's can.
For that reason, I shy away from them unless that I am sure of their history.
I bought a great running '03 Gsxr600 from the original owner a few years ago, 13k miles, for pennies, and doubled my money after full maintenance on it, and being comfortable to sell it as a quality bike...but that is a rare occurance.
750's are pretty good too, but I prefer the 900's and up.

If you don’t weigh too much an SV650 with suspension upgrades and maybe an exhaust mod would do a good job. They’re very flickable from the factory and only weigh 400 pounds or so. Used ones can be had for cheap too. This salvage title S model is really cheap. Older ones had carbs so look for the FI models, 2003 and after I think.
