600 mile maintenance - Synthetic or Non?

So, my 08 busa has reached its 600 mile mark and it's time for maintenance. I will be changing the Oil and Filter myself along with the other necessary items to inspect/tighten on the maintenance list.

I recall reading somewhere that you should only use synthetic after the 3000 mile mark. Is this true? Can someone clarify?

Thanks

i think if you use anything but what suzk recommendeds it will cause warranty issues if you have problems and have to bring it in...i might be wrong

Thats a loaded question, youll probably get a thousand different answers here. Most will say use syn. only after 3000 mile service but some may not. I think you'll be good no matter what you deceide

Yeah really.. I think that is the one question that will get you the most different answers..

Exactly! turbobusa2000 hit the nail on the head. You will get a thousand different answers.
Me personally, I went with the standard Suzuki SAE 10W-40 for my 600 mile & my 1,850 mile changes. The next one, which I will change at approx 3,500 will be w/ a full syn.
OEM oil filter is more then adequate.

Just last week I was reading a bunch of tech articles about motor oils.
Seems true "Full Synthetic" oils are really expensive.
The stuff you pull off the shelf at Wal-mart that claims to be Full Syn really isn't at all
They use "Synthetic" as a marketing term, there was a law suit about it.

but anyway, the stuff on the shelf that says Synthetic is really just super pure regular oil.
And they use more expensive additive packages to it.
There's like 5 grades of oil

I'll try to find the link for it so you can read it.

Read that

"In the late 1990s, Castrol started selling an oil made from Group III base oil and called it SynTec Full Synthetic. Mobil sued Castrol, asserting that this oil was not synthetic, but simply a highly refined petroleum oil, and therefore it was false advertising to call it synthetic. In 1999, Mobil lost their lawsuit. It was decided that the word "synthetic" was a marketing term and referred to properties, not to production methods or ingredients. Castrol continues to make SynTec out of Group III base oils, that is highly purified mineral oil with most all of the cockroach bits removed."

I did not know that. Interesting.

bobtheoilguy.com

now all syn oils have a % of dino oil, nobody will tell you the ratio. amsoil agents will tell you there is 100% syn oil, but i've read they too have started adding in dino oil.

Yep, Fram oil filters are J U N K.

As far as dino vs synthetic at 600 miles, is 600 miles on a motorcycle engine enough mileage for everything to 'seat' properly ? I dont know, I'm asking myself as this bike is my first new bike purchased, my others were purchased used.

On light duty diesel engines found in pick-ups, you arent suppose to switch to synthetic until 30,000 miles, it takes that long for everything to break-in and seat.

you know how FRAM always gets a bad rap.......

from silverstone........good enough for them, good enough for me?

ok, i don't see any fram sponsorship decals? and again if it's good enough for a $xxx, xxx car w/ XXX? hp , you'd think it'd be good enough for a $10k, 170hp bike........

Yep, I realize that you cant see any decals in those pics you posted, but that doesnt mean Fram doesnt sponsor them or that the decals are simply out of sight. No biggie to me, feel free to use them if you like. I certainly wont use them based on what was found when multiple units were cut open.

Back on topic.

Thanks for the replies guys, definitely a lot of useful info in here. I called up the nearest suki dealer here and quoted me $7.99 for a liter of spectro/delray (petroleum) and $13 for synthetic... The parts guy asked me why I'm putting synthetic on a 600 mile bike and advised to use it only after 4500 miles.

This is good info

And that may be a "custom" filter, not the standard fram with cardboard end-caps.. I wouldn't risk it to save a few bucks.
