A first bike.....

.....Or perhaps one of these.

It all really varies though. Some schools of thought say start small and build your way up. Certainly that is what I hear they do in Europe and there is definitely merit (and safety) to that. There is no "best bike" because all beginners are not equal. All things considered, starting smaller is always a much safer bet.

Someone once told me to get the biggest bike I thought I could handle because I would outgrow a smaller one quick. The choice really depends on the person, their ability and above all, responsibilty.

I took heed to that and talked to lots of experienced riders before getting one. My Busa is my first and only bike thus far. I have had the great advantage of riding with a number of more experienced riders and have gotten excellent tips and advice.

Keep in mind I could not have ridden one in my 20s (nor afforded one, frankly) and that it is one of few bikes that I could sit comfortably on at my height and weight without feeling like I'm on a Tricycle.

I rode a buddy's ZX10 to his road test and refused to ride it back. Most uncomfortable for me.

I found a sweetheart of a deal on mine and took the leap and havent looked back. I definitely would not advocate the average person starting this big though. Personally if I started on a 600, that bike would not have lasted 2 months.

JMHO . . .

I would not say a Hayabusa but more like a gs500 or a gsxr 600
most of the sportbikes present more bike than most new riders can even get a close handle on.. I like the Suzuki SV bikes as they have such a smooth power band.. (and the SV1000 can run right along side the busa with a pipe and tuning)

LOL Billy Busa! Can I get a 4 in 1, double bubble and adjustable foot rest with one of those? Maybe some Marchesini magnesium wheels?

Best first bike is the one that you can fit on, operate with some confidence and stand back up ON YOUR OWN after it and YOU go down..

Found this in the link he posted...

a fast motorcycle is constantly begging you to open the throttle; you will very easily ride much faster than you ever planned to, and when you are able to withold, such a bike is no fun to ride.

Whoever wrote that obviously does not enjoy riding as much as I do....it's not all about throttle! Gimme some twisties!!!!

Definitely not a Busa. Get the cheapest, decent running bike you can find. There are plenty of older 500 to 650cc sized bikes you can get for the $1000 to $1500 range. A twin would be my choice for a new rider. Cosmetics are great to have, but tires, chain, and sprockets will cost you $$$$s if you have to replace them. Plus, you are pretty much guaranteed to drop the bike one or more times. A smaller bike is easier to pick up and an older bike doesn't cost as much, especially if it wasn't in mint condition in the first place.

As with many answers, it depends.

Does the person have good hand/eye coordination? Prone to accidents in cars? Ever at least ridden a bicycle? Ever ridden horses? Driven a car with a standard transmission? Anxious to ride? Just doing it to show family or friends? Big person or little person? Aggressively minded or timid?

Lots of things to think about and no one bike is the right answer. However, I do recommend you buy used first. Learn. Sell or trade in for the next bike when ready.
