I was watching the Deadliest Catch and some of them are fishing near the coast of Louisiana in the off season. I noticed that one of their much smaller boats was running four Mercury outboards marked 350. I looked them up and was shocked to see that they’re 2.6 liter 350 hp supercharged 24 valve inline sixes that weigh 668 pounds each! Seems unreal to me that a smallish boat can handle over 2,600 pounds hanging off the transom with a combined 1,400 hp.

I am. Composites have come a very long way as has the actual understanding of how to use all the tools such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) & Finite Element Analysis (FEA). All the go fast boats such as the Nor-Tech, Blackwater, Mystic, Sunsation etc are very advanced. Even some small 18' 500 lb bay boats are full carbon/kevlar will run up to a 150hp Zuke, Merc or Yamaha.

If you ever want to be surprised I suggest you attend the FLIBS event once per year down here in Florida. It's the largest boat show in the world with $5B+ in boats. I can promise you that you've never seen so many boats of all sizes in one place including super yachts.

This shot shows how small the boats are to have 1,400 hp out of

four outboards. It’s not very big. Its kinda blurry. Might have four 250s. Couldn’t find a shot of the boat from the show.

My next oldest brother used to design and build fiberglas boats...he built a few really cool boats that ended up in Florida...they were all in boards though...

That sure is a lot of outboards to be put on there...they must have some serious structure to support them.

I’m not a boater guy, but when I lived down in Miami I used to see all those bada$$ boats and wondered how in the world did they sync all those motors to operate together and keep things balanced when they pinned the throttle.
