Any computer gurus here?

I know this is probably better suited in a different forum but this on gets the most looks...
I have an HP Pavillion desktop with Windows Vista. This thing has work pretty well for a couple of years buy last week it completely would not recognize it's DVD drive, it shows it's there on the control panel but it won't play or even attempt to read any discs. I take the easy route and buy an external DVD drive, and it won't work either. Any ideas?

Have you looked at it in Device Manager to see if windows reports there is a problem?

I've tried all kinds of searches and found alot of info on people with the same problem but I couldn't really understand the lingo. Apparently HP is notorious for this

Went into that too and set it to defaults. :-( no luck

Take a look at this sounds kinda like your problem..

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
