anyone change turbo bearings?

Was wondering how hard it is to change bearings.
Everyone sells the kit for around 75 but did not want to waste the money if I had to get bearing pullers-presses and whatnot.

Thanks

bumo ! i never have but have had lots of bearing puller pressing done , i use a local auto parts store they have a shop out back usualy will press out and in a bearing for about ten bucks why i wait thats for the tough ones usualy the bench vice works well with some sockets !

Installing the bearings and seals is not your problem. On reassembly,.....there is virtually no way to know that the balance is correct. Once you remove the compressor wheel and re-install,.......it is now out of balance. If you wish to save cash and get some hands-on experience,............install the bearings and seals,.......then send it to a rebuilder to have it balanced. The last thing you want is to "grenade" the turbo at 125,000 rpms. The engine is sure to eat some of the pieces!!!!!

its safe to assume that the turbo assembly was balanced from the factory. If you mark it and make sure its exactly where it was before you took it apart, you will have the exact same balance.

People try to make turbo rebuilds sound really difficult. its all hog wash. They are extreme simple. Simply mark both wheels before taking it apart and you'll be fine.

Ryan,.............my man,..............I agree with the fact that turbo rebuilding is extremely simple. I would suggest for future reference,.............to remember that everyone's mechanical aptitude and abilities are NOT the same. IF this guy does get this turbo put back together exact,..........his chances of survival are good,........BUT,...............let's for a second assume,.............something was slightly overtighten,......or bent,.......prior to the disassembly. He will not know until it "grenades". I stand strong by suggesting to spend another $50 and have it checked for balance. He has already saved hundreds by rebuilding it himself. Just my 2 cents!! Have a great week!!!

same could be said about any mechanical job. I don't see the difference between that and several dozen other jobs you could do to a bike. Why are turbo's somehow different and require an expert? Or do all mechanical jobs require an expert?

We take a risk anytime we step into unfamiliar waters, and there is always a possible expensive error in that. But that doesn't change what I said: If the turbo was in good shape before you take it apart, and you don't screw something up, there is no need to balance it.

If the fan and turbine were originally balanced as an assembly the correct method is to rebalance after rebuild.
Do you have to? Of course not but like everything else there is usually only one correct way to do a job. Some times things done the wrong way by short cutting will provide an obvious negative result and sometimes it may not be apparent but that doesn't make it right.
On some turbo's (e.g. Super 16G) the fan and turbine are balanced separately or so I have been told. If that were the case a rebalance shouldn't be necessary.

Heh. One right way eh? I guess that depends who you ask.

I asked someone that rebuilds turbo's for a living. I also found several articles that said the same thing. I have no doubt you will also find "experts" that tell you to always balance them. Thats the thing you find about experts in many fields. Lots of people will tell you their version of "the right way".

So pick the one that gives you a warm fuzzy feeling.

This is why I asked the question.
I have been told many diffrent things, some say the rebuild is hard some say easy some say blance others say dont.

I found a site that takes you step by step through a rebuild so I feel that it is going to be cake.

I would prefer to have it balanced, even if I get it back together 100% 50$ is not a big deal but I cant find anyone around Portland Oregon that does it. Shipping is going to be around 25$ each way to send it somewhere.

Im going for it.....no blance.....but only because it is a pain and I am decent at doing this sort of thing. If there was someone local.....I would do it.

Thanks for the replys.

Thanks
