Hey Guys...and Gals, I recently picked up a "stock" seat and was going to send it off to Tobin. After looking into the cost and wait time, and the fact I really dont want any fancy lettering or kanji symbols.....all i'm after is to sit lower in the bike for dragracing(I have a gel seat for cruising and long rides). I was thinking about just pulling the staples out, carefully removing the cover and going to work! I think I could just cut & shape the foam with an electric carving knife(hope my wife doesn't see this:whistle:), get it to the height and shape I want the re-stretch and staple the cover back on. Anyone ever attempted this before or have any input? Thanks in advance:beerchug:

I just recover the seat on the SV I just bought they turned out OK but would look much better if I had sent them off to Tobin

I did mine put new ostrich skin right over the original cover and extra padding too

Thanks fellaz,
Doze, did you try an electric knife? You can also you a scotch brite pad on the end of a die grinder....this helps to shape and smooth the foam. At least thats what i've seen on T.V.
Well I think i'm gonna try to tackle mine, so i will post pics of the procedure as i go.:beerchug:

you're on the right track carving it with the electric knife. my wife's uncle is an upholster and that is the exact tool he uses to shape new foam padding. you could also buy the gel insert on line and lay her on top of your newly cut out seat as well to achieve more comfort.

well since it's strictly for racing the worst thing that could happen is that it looks like crap and you don't like it. The do over is simple though. Just rip all the stuffing and everything off the plastic pan, add some stomp grip to it and leave it like that for racing only.

Cool! the next challenge I think im going to have is what to use to re-attach the cover back onto the plastic seat pan? ??? I dont know if a standard staple "gun" will be strong enough? But like Commuta mentioned, its not like i couldnt send it in after i mangle it to get it done right.

I recovered my stock seat just using a half way decent staple gun. Just use alot of staples.

Being a complete novice with apholstery meant that I still ended up with a few wrinkles on the sides. I like to think it was because of the material.

The seat was black... I even re-did the pillian one as well. Just take you're time and I'm sure you'll get it lookin good.

Very Nice commuta  If mine turns out half as good, i'll be cool with that. I will keep you guys updated, I plan on starting this today or tomorrow :beerchug:

Toxsic,
If you are going to make a "stepped" seat for dragracing, make sure its designed in such a way that you can slide your ass all the way back to the hump once your in 3rd gear. I actually raised the rear of the hump to get my back and butt as level with the hump as possible. If you are stuck in the lower part of the seat, you will give up almost 2 mph in the quarter.
$.02

Thanks Draco, but the only problem i have is with my fat azz! 40" waist.....So what i was actually thinking is just a cut down low seat with out the step, but now you gotz me thinking about the mph. You say theres 2mph to be had getting yourself "higher" on the bike? Not questioning you(well kinda I guess, I dont understand this)...thought it would be just the opposite? Please explain. Thanks Bro
