Anyone Done Exhaust Heat Wrap ??

Chatting to the guy who's doing my exhaust welding, and he said he would wrap the exhaust while it's off the bike. Says it 'flows' better and keeps the heat down in the engine area.

Anyone done this and is it worth the trouble ?

You will notice less heat but I prefer to get it ceramic coated before I would use the wrap. Maybe I would consider it on a cafe racer or some type of bike like that because it adds to the "look" But if you ride your bike a lot in all types of weather I'm not sure how long those wraps will hold up against the elements

^^^ What turbojonny said. The wrap will hold up in all kinds of weather, it's fiberglass. The problem is when you remove the wrap you find all the stuff that the wrap has been holding in.

Are you using the stock header, and having the cat cut out?
Replacing cat with H or X pipe?

I'm getting a SS exhaust header made up with a wideband 18mm hole and its in an 'H' config.... Not looked into ceramic coating but I bet its a hell of a lot more than the $10 for heat wrap !

exhaust wrap wont make enough of a difference to make it worth while. As stated above it will rust the crap right out of your pipes too.

He is using stainless steel, so rust is not an issue.
I have personally ridden 2 of my friends bikes with exhaust wrap. In the summer heat.
And some 4 wheelers with it too.

It most definately works.
More heat goes out the tail pipe, than radiating on to your legs, or to the inside of the fairings.

Some people seem to think that a degree or two makes no difference.
To them I say; water boils at 212 degrees...but 211 is just really, really hot.

I've been reading up on it (as I'm anal retentive) and science says that a 10 degC increase (As wrapping increases the exhaust heat internally) will give approx 3.5% flow efficiency in gasses in the exhaust, as well as improving its scavenging ability which = POWER !. For $10 its worth 3.5% even if its only a 1-2hp gain.

....and, your feet will appreciate it

I believe this as far as the heat helping the pipe flow properly. The exhaust gases are much less dense at exhaust port temp than at the end of the pipe. The longer they are hot the better the flow. I was going to get mine ceramic coated but never got around to it.

If you all live back East having wrap on the stock steel header will certainly show major corrosion internally because of all that damn moisture. Here in the hot SW we don't have these issues. SS will corrode also just not as quickly. If the SS is thin like what Brock puts out or at least did back in the day with the Hindle/Brock systems, it will suffer from corrosion as well. Seen it first hand on 2 bikes out here and they did not have wrap. Pin holes after the bend of the primaries to the collecors. Moisture settling in that area?

If you spent the big bucks on Titanium, it is suggested not to wrap it as well according to the expert mettallurgists out there. Even ceramic coatings on titanium I hear is not a good idea but I really do not know for sure. Never tried it but thought about the coating.

Now on ceramic coating, I have had it done on many projects over the years from HTC, Jet-Hot and a local company Synergy Coatings. All of them looked good and held up ok. But you still cannot touch a header or turbo housing with your bare hands. I cannot say that it is much different than no coating at all IMHO. I started spending the big bucks and now use Swaintech. This stuff is the real deal but it is still not advisable to touch it too...lol but you do notice a difference. I have also used the wrap and it is the only product that really keeps the heat down substantially and you can touch it for short amount of time. Just a little PITA get.

Performance gains? So hard to measure on a bike but on a car it might show up as an advantage.

Ceramic coating is the only way to go. But be careful on what type of coating and who dose it. They are not all the same, Maybe two that are legit. I have had mine done for several years now and no problems, Cool to. So do your home work it is not cheap but well worth it.

It was used in nascar because it does reduce underhood temps, especially when races last for hours.
Yes, it will raise peak hp higher in the rpms on a 2stroke, so they stopped using it in races.
No, it isnt used in Superbike, MotoGP to my knowledge. And who cares, its a 20 min race.
If it can cause damage to titanium, then it can.
As far as a daily rider goes, heat wrap makes a noticeable difference in heat radiating off of pipes, on to your legs, and under the fairings.
Never once did I see a temperature guage rise, any at all. Which it would have to do if the wrap was causing the head to get hotter.
