Anyone here into Ham Radio?

On a recent ride we were way out in the boonies, and I realized I was the only one in contact with civilization. Nobody had cell service, but I could hit several repeaters from my HT. Anyone else here take a Ham radio along with them on rides?

You don't know K4TSF, do ya?

I've had my ham license for about 40 years but I haven't been too active lately. I've never taken my radios on a bike trip. Too little space to carry it. I would think a handheld would be too underpowered to go far when you're in the boonies. That repeater must have been close. I'd be tempted to put a mobile rig on the bike but it's too full of electronics as it is.

My wife has her license too. Maybe we should start using them again. The cell phones are so convenient but in the sticks or during an emergency, the ham radios are about the only sure fire communications we would have.

I have made two jpole roll up antennas, one dual band, one two meter that I can unroll and hang up and reach out 50-60 miles omni on 5 watts no problem. I am running a yeasu HT. checked in tonight with the net from 45 miles out. Signal was clean. Be safe out there.

I read or heard recently that they just reduced the requirements to be licensed. Trying to spur interest again.

ok done with search

:badpc: the read is giving me a headache :banghead:

amateur radio doesn't sound so easy I think i would rather spring for a good satlite phone hopefully that would get through in a pinch

I always thought it was for nerds.. Now after seeing who's into it, I'm quite sure.. :poke:

I KEEED, I KEEED!!

It's too expensive of a hobby for me. There is a really cool place up the road from my house (Amateur Electronics Supply) that I stop into once and a while, and there are some SWEET radios out there! I used to be a CB geek back in the day (still have an old Galaxy in the garage) and I've always been curious about HAM..
