Is anyone running 16-44, if so, how do you like/dislike it?? I am currently running 16-42, but I rode a buddy's bike this weekend with a 17-44. Talk about hellified low-end torque and launching power!!

I am wondering if I will get more with a 16-44 or 16-45??

Thanks in advance for any input.

I just replaced my sprokets and chain, but stayed with stock gearing. I couldn't imagine going that route. You'll need a new rear tire every month and a half.

With a strutted rear I'm guessing it is a strip only deal. Your 16-42 is about the same as his 17-44. At the strip you really need to tune it to your weight, desired rpm and gear you want to cross the line with. I run a 16-42. I've ran a 16-43, but the 42 is bit better for me. The 17-44 has the potential to be a bit easier on chains.

I have the 16/43 right now, more front end action over the 17/43 i was running
and as allways the professor is right .

I was at the local shop today discussing the same thing with the owner (well known in Philly area) telling him I was thinking of going to a 17/43,he told me since I have NOS and 99% of my ride is street that its not worth it for me.he said he only suggests changing sprockets if its soley a drag bike,he said it would be "howling"at 55mph with the 17/43 on normal rides.....what do you guys feel about this? I really didnt think it would do any unnecasary harm when not dragging but apparently he feels its not a good idea for me...hmmmm??

Sounds like a certain owner doesn't know much about gearing and is repeating the "he said, she said deal". 16/42 is perfect for riding in the mountains and local areas. If you do alot of distance riding then you won't want a 16/42 setup. The 17/43 will be fine and give you alittle more grunt.

sounds to me like he knows plenty,a street bike with spray dosn't need a lot of gear

this is pretty much what he was getting at.

btw, there are no Mountains in Philly, just looooong straight highways,if you know what I mean..haha

i see both side of the story on the gearing but your not on the spray all the time. so the gear change will work great for all around driving i have 17-44 and on the street its sick i have yet to spray it to see what my rpm's are at the end of the 1320. to see if i need more gear of less.

agreed.....everyone has a different idea on what works with gearing,i seem to go against the grain on this one

to me changing gearing should be about improving accelleration,if you can't pin the throttle in 1st (without letting off, because of a giant wheelstand or blowing the tire off) and hit the shift button when the light comes on,whats the point ?

Here's what I understand about gearing. my .02C
17/44 gear ratio 2.59
17/42 2.47
17/40 2.35 stock

16/44 2.75
16/42 2.63
16/40 2.50

If you notice a 17/44 and 16/42 are close in gearing ratio's.

Here is a chart.
