Authority of a traffic cop

I posted this question in another thread, but thought it might deserve it's own topic. I have wondered about this for a long time and have never had the opportunity to ask.

When a LEO decides to let you go; is it something he takes it upon himself to do? Is he actually granted authority to tell people to have a nice day when he lights them up for 80 in a 45? Your driving record and finances hang in the balance as this guy decides if he wants to issue a citation or not.

Although I am happy the county LEO didn't haul my arsh to jail or even cite me last year for 95 in a 45, I wonder what his superiors would do if they knew what he did.

Notice: I haven't said that you don't deserve a ticket when you break posted limits or reasonable driving habits, this is about the other end of a ticket. There are no flames here, I'm just asking a question.

It's called officers discretion or lunch thirty

If you get pulled over while a rookie is in training...you can count on a ticket. Training is by the book....after that it is up to the officer.

I joke with my police officer buddy that it's been so long since he actually wrote tickets, he'd probably need to take a class to relearn the techniques

He never laughs when I say that though...hrmmm...

I was behind him on Monday at a stop light, revving the Mustang

Love doing that...he just waved and probably thought "damn, I wish I could recall how to write a ticket."

I must always get pulled over by rookies in training...luckily not very frequently. September 05 and July 07.

It's unlawful and taxable to rev your motor while parked behind a law enforcement agent in Va. No really.

Out here 50mph over gets you a free trip to jail and your ride goes to impound. No discretion is allowed under the law, and I can't say that I disagree in this instance. If the posted limit is 45 than your almost certain to be in an area with intersections, driveways and pedestrians (including children

).
