Basic Turbo Busa Questions

I'm not new to turbos nor fast motorcycles, but I am new to turbo motorcycles. With that being said, I'm in the mists of buying a 2000 busa with a basic turbo kit on it. It has a turbonextics turbo with many handmade components (plenum and manifold etc).

My first intention is to make sure the bike is running properly. If anything like turbo cars, I guess I'll put it on a dyno and log a few pulls. My questions is: What will I need as far as computer systems/ sensors go to make sure everything is fine and to tune it properly? Some of the old turbo car's i've worked with are very hard to tune without a standalone computer system. Is a power commander all i need for XXX hp?

My next question is: what hp should I expect on 93oct pump gas? It has stock internatls with basic supporting mods (fuel pump, injectors etc). I want a conservative tune.

Lastly, I understand the concept on why a turbo busa will smoke when cold, (turbo return line/ turbo being too low etc). But how realistic is this? Is the seller simply giving me a line and the motor is actually hurt? Will this become a problem?

The bike is supposedly tight, sound and tested, but the last thing I want is to have to rebuild the motor when it could have been avoided.

Lastly, what's the best forum for hayabusa/turbo hayabusa owners?

Thanks!

Smoke when cold is new to me???? My bike has continuously had problems because my GT35 turbo sits so darn low. I ran an electric scavage pump for the longest time & now I am changing to the mechanical pump cause I am sick of replacing them. I would just listen for any motor noises. How many miles are on the bike? I run about 240 on pump gas, that's a safe tune. I hear you can run more but you flirt with head gaskets.

Thanks for the info.

Anything above 220 on pump, I'll be happy with.

The bike has just over 17k miles on it :nervous: and from what I understand, it has had the turbo on it for a good chunk of those miles. With that being said, neither person who owned the bike was one to beat on it (e.g. bouncing off the revlimiter, numerous 1/4 mile passes etc etc), but a turbo busa was really only made with one goal I guess.

I was told the smoke on start up results from oil equalizing in the system and slightly backing up into the turbo when cold???

What boost got you 240hp? and what problems have you had resulting from your low turbo? Also, is the GT35 the same GT35R we use in cars? If so that seems like complete over kill for a pump gas busa? Thanks again!

there are a few things to look for

the smoke on start up id be a little leery with but some bikes still do it some dont

there is nothing wrong with hand built as long as it isnt a hack job

No the GT35-61 is not dual ball bearing, it's journal bearing. The GT35R is dual, Yes. Its pretty much overkill, atleast for me. I just paid so little for it, I could not pass it up.
I ran a 5.5 lbs spring in the 44mm tial wastegate. I would say the only reason it would smoke on start-up would be because the bike is draining oil into the turbo when it sits on the side stand. My buddy has the same problem and all he did to solve it was put the bike up on a front stand, then no more oil can drain into the turbo. It could be saturating the turbo seals, then it smokes on start-up.

It sounds luke the same problem. He said turbo busa's will do this and the problem can be fixed with an electric motor somewhere in the draining end of the oil system or by getting a larger return line and plumming a larger opening in the oil pan for it. It all sounds like it makes sense but he could be talkig out his ass. I did some research and it does sound like it happens :-/. Thanks again for the info, keep it coming it you have more

well the deal fell through.

Where is the best place to locate a turbo hayabusa for sale?
What are my options in the NY/NJ area to get a kit installed/tuned?

Hi. My advice to get a nice turbo kit installed and good tune with nice results:

Powerhouse motorcycles. Powerhouse Motorcycles NY : Full Service Sport Bike Dynojet Tuning Specialists
pHONE# 631-491-6767 and his name Frank Davis:beerchug:

I hope this info help you.
Fernando.

Yeah, who wouldn't want a fresh kit on their bike? It's so much additional time and money though. I don't have the time to do nearly any of the build myself so I'd be paying for nearly all of it! :banghead: I'm looking for something clean and not all chromed out (not that i don't like it, it's just not something i want to spend my $$ on right now.) To me this is perfection: Suzuki : Hayabusa:eBay Motors (item 280334866394 end time Apr-26-09 20:00:00 PDT) Anyone know anything about the bike, including if it's still for sale or not?

I know if it was installed by "motorhead" aka Dennis Clanton, it was done as cheaply and crudely as he could do it...

However, his bikes normally have reputations of making power and being well tuned.

I paid the price to know that one first hand

I hope to save others the experience and the cash.

Oh, I don't know, not everyone had issues until the end of his reign on SH.org. I have one of his kits from 2006 and there was nothing wrong with the install or the quality of parts. Garrett T3 60trim (not Chinese), TIAL BOV and wastegate, BEGI FMU, header and dump pipe (still no cracks), I also have the full HMF pipe and the 40mm Ghetto intercooler, nicely fabbed and polished plenum, up pipes, etc. I upgraded everything since and the only thing original that I still have is the plenum modded for secondaries.

I guess at the end his parts were being replaced with knock off parts.

The only thing I disliked about Dennis is that he was very arrogant as far as the power he was getting from his kits as well as denying everyone why they were having teething issues, such as boost creep for example. I never saw the gains he always seemed to get no matter what tuner had it...... generous dynojet dyno? Don't know for sure. But the kit worked and the bike certainly made more power over stock.

His stuff was essentially the same as RCC Turbos' earlier setups. Since, RCC has made some minor changes along the way and is considered one of the best kits to own.

Thanks for the info on Motorhead. Is there really a genernal consensus that I should stay away from a bike he's worked with? Again, I'm looking for something on the reliable side. I don't need to be breaking hp records for a stock motor'ed busa with some wild aggressive tune. And it sounds like Motorhead does just what I don't want...

How badly should I avoid this bike?

Also, any major signs i need to look for when buying a turboed busa other than what you look for on an NA bike? I guess the waste gate dumps have a tendency to crack?

Thanks again for the info

I was at his "shop in 02, 03 and 05. 02 for an "install" 03 for him to fix the install. And in 05 for personally reasons and I drove there for nothing because he was no where to be found.

Turbo gix I have dyno'd higher locally than it did on Dennis's dyno so I can't claim happy dyno.

Dennis repackaged RCC kits and used as cheap of accessories s he could get his hands on.

So how worried should I be about the bike? What can are signes that the kit may not be up to snuff? (e.g. what parts/signs of future problems should I be looking for). Or should i avoid the bike all together? It runs strong and has had no probelms during the time the kits been on it? What are the chances of going wrong if it hasn't already? (as a result of Dennis's hands being on it.)

thanks

only really well known problems "his kits" experienced were...fmu's taking a crap or a small early run where the external gates fell off.

I would say if the gate is intact, inspect the welds and consider it a non issue.

did you buy the bike?

there are alot of turbo busas for sale out there, watch the boards there is some very good deals on them that are tuned and ready to go

Didn't buy a bike yet. I'm trying to schedule a drive out to see the one i posted above. I'm looking for something clean and without chrome/ other accessories. Doesn't have to make big hp either. I'm looking for something less expensive but will not take lots of $$ to maintain.

Yeah, I've had my eyes pealed. Is this site and sh.org the best place to look?
