Battery Problem??

Hey guys,

Its been just about 5 weeks since Iv started my gen 2 busa up. I went to start it tonight and it wouldn't start up. Popped the clutch and got her started a few minutes later then went for a nice quick 30 minute ride to get some juice in the battery, came back, shut the bike off and then back on and it started but you can see the battery needs to be charged because it hesitated a little. My question is, is this common? I have an aftermarket LED kit by drastik plastix on the bike (dealer installed) but It wasnt on, I didnt leave it on or anything while the bike was stored for 5 weeks. Is this unusual? Im buying a battery tender tomorrow so I can juice up the battery fully, properly. Thanks for any help and info you can give me. The bike is brand new with about 450 miles on it. I dont get to ride it much unfortunately though.

Battery tender isn't used for charging a dead battery. You will need to use a 3A charger for 5-6 hours, or a 1A charger for 8-10 hours. THEN use a Tender to maintain it.

Same thing happened to my '05 when new, with no installed accessories. Since mine sits for several weeks between rides (with no power outlet to install battery tender), the dealer suggested I disconnect my battery between rides. So, I disconnect the negative terminal after every ride (easily accessible; it's under the seat), and, as a result, my 5-year old battery is still good. The only issue is the necessity to reset the clock on every start.

everyone that does not ride their bike on a regular basis NEEDS a battery tender, it maintains the battery cause when its sitting the battery is always loosing its power... then when ur trying to start it once every few weeks ur gonna kill it....:rulez: battery tender $30 get one everyone and u will knowtice a great improvement in starting

Thanks guys, I bought a battery tender and a battery charger today. Set it on 2v and it took about 4 hours to charge completely. The battery had some juice in it before the charge but not nearly enough.

Always charge a battery on a 2amp setting only...6amp will charge the battery faster or a quick charge,,but will shorten the life of the battery,,,alot of cheap battery chargers do not have a automatic shut off,,,read the manual please,,and always charge the battery until it indicates 1 amp or less,,If a battery does not drop down to 1 amp or less ,then this indicates that the battery is loseing life and is not at 100%,,,,,remember to always hook the battery up first then plug it into the wall,,not the other way around,,a spark can cause the battery to explode,,,,,,,and if and when replaceing the battery ,charge it on a 2 amp slow charge to maximize the full potential of a 100% , Charging a new battery takes a rate of 3 to 8 hours, and when its closer to a full charge the needle will slow down to a 1 amp or less,,,everyone has their preferance,,,but i really like the factory yahvasa[sp] factory batterys,,the after markets seem to not last,,but the factory battery usualy will last me 5-6 years and a cheap one 1-2 yrs,,,,I was also instructed thru the batter industry that the more lead,,the longer it would last with better quality,,a factory battery weight is 9.2 lbs,,after markets run between 6.5 and 8lbs,,,but their are other batterys that these board members know about that are special made that are light,,but will last a long time,,my input is based upon OEM and cheap after markets,,,,Also periodically disconnect the terminals and clean them with a wire brush,,although they may appear clean,,that grayish film on the terminals and the battery posts can hinder the battery to recieve a charge from the statter[alternator

Question, put the battery back in the bike today after the charge. Seems to start fine, When I hit the start button I get my usual 1-2 second delay before the engine turns over(on). I shut it on and off a few times (not sure if thats good or not, probably not) and I noticed the more I turned it on and off and then immediately back on the longer it took the engine to turn over. Then I shut it off for about a minute, then turned it back on again and it was normal with the 1-2 second delay prior the engine turning on. Is this normal or is there a problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

just alil thing i always use is i charge mine at a tenth of the rated amp hour untill fully charged,

That makes sense. Except the lowest it lets me go on this charger is 2amp. Then it automatically shuts off once it is fully charged so you cant over charge it.

slow charge = Longer lasting battery,,,,,,and clean the terminals and the battery posts to ensure your getting a good connection and full charge is being recieved fron the stator,,alot of people wont beieve that ,,that little grayish fim will stop a charge,,,Ive seen it 100 times,,,,,,,,
