Bent Dymag Wheel

Kon, it is the streetfighter. It looks like the carbon, but is magnesium I believe. They do seem to be pretty strong since I rode over 15,000 miles on the with no trouble from potholes and such. I know Kosmans are much easier to bend because I know 2 other Vmaxers with them and they bend just from normal road use. The Vmax is 100 pounds heavier than a Busa, with only 120 rwhp. So to shift in a wheelie on it I have to be almost vertical or it won't stay up. And when you hit neutral on any bike over 600 pounds that high, somethings got to give! My friend got it on video and it has now been dubbed the most expensive wheelie of the year! I contacted Superbike Racing and they are who I needed. They will try to fix the wheel, and if they can't they will replace the outer rim. Thanks for the advice. After talking to them, I think my wheels probably came from there. I bought them used from a guy switching to chain drive.

I am interested in putting my bike on a diet, as the angle for improving performance, so I asked my dealer about Dymags, after drooling over their site. I was told to be warying of bent wheels, that the lighter wheels do improve weight and performance, but with this potential trade-off. They said Dymags are great for the track, but in the real world environment of potholes, be careful. I trust their input, since some of them do race, and sponsor some riders. I'm disappointed, because damn, those wheels look nice.

The wheel is actually on my Vmax, not my Busa. Back in September, doing a high 1st to 2nd gear wheelie I hit neutral and came down very hard. This put a flat spot in my front wheel. I rode it up until last week like this. Now we are finally snowed in here so I have the bike all apart for winter mods. Does anyone know of a place which can straiten it and recoat it, it has some kind of clear over the polished material. I know the wheel is not cast, because I took a lot of the spot out with a piece of soft wood and a hammer. Or, should I just bite the bullet and get a new outer rim from Dymag. Also, has anyone here ever taken a Dymag apart and know if you need special equipment to true it when reassembling? Thanks for any advice!

Supermax,
have you heard any information on a version of the VMAX for next year ? I got a recent catalogue of next years bikes on release in Japan that has a version of the VMAX rated at 200hp !

Superbike Racing can answer all of your questions about dymags. There number is 912-242-0666. Let me know if you need another one. I can get you a pretty good price for it.

Konrad, the carbon fiber Dymags are the strongest wheels on the market.
Dymag sells two wheels in carbon:
Full carbon fiber wheels or
carbon rim with magnesium spokes

Magnesium is soft, there is a company in california that repairs wheels. I doubt you can repair a wheel with a hammer and have it run true.

Good Luck

What kind of Dymag wheel is it[Carbon,
Mag?] Im thinkin of getting a set
of Custom Carbon for the Busa, and
dont want to if they are weak

The only reason I knocked it out like I said was to make it better than it was, not fix it. I am a very avidrider, 20,000 miles last season and I did not want to send the wheel out till the season was over due to downtime. For anyone wondering about weight, the wheel, which is 3.5 X 17 weighed 9.7 lbs on the ups scale last night. And this was packed in the box. This was of course without rotors and tire. My friends at the shop, thought it was really light after removing the tire. The reason I put them on was for tire size, not weight. The Vmax comes with an 18 in front and 15 in rear. Your tire choices are very limited and the rear looks puny by todays standards. I was able to run a 190 in the rear with the Dymags
