Best year Busa?

I have always been told that the 99's were the fastest stock, and easiest to make faster. I was told that this was due to the fact that after 99, they "limited" the bikes through the computer. I was recently told by a friend that the 2003's were supposed to be the first bike that had as much potential (and was as fast stock) as the 1999. I was told that this was due to a newly remapped fuel system. Is there any truth to this? Were there any changes/performance increases made on the 2004 to combat the new 180hp R1, and 184hp ZX-10?

I am looking to purchase a Haybusa (possibly here real soon), and want to make sure I don't end up with a "bad" or "not as good" year. The other reason I ask is that I really like the silver/silver paint scheme and thus would prefer a 2003 (unless the 2004 is a faster bike).

THEY ARE ALL FAST ... I HAVE A 2002 BLACK AND BLUE...

where the heck did you come up with this stuff lmao.its either a 99 or early 00 or the rest pretty simple no?dont listen to anyone just look at some dyno s here every year has some hp on high side and low.you gonna mod it anyways no?

I agree with Rob T ... 99 and 00 were unrestricted off the shelf. 2001 and on were restricted but a TRE/ATRE was a $50 fix for unrestricting the busa. So the bottom line was that whether it was off the shelf or with a $50 its still the fastest thing on 2 wheels.

As for 180hp R1 and 184hp ZX-10 thats

able. All bikes have been restricted in accordance with some general agreement to 184 mph. And the stats on both the R1 and Zx-10 are around 150 rear wheel hp.

Go back and check your numbers, cause it sounds like someone is trying to blow smoke up ya

Welcome to the board.  I think it has been covered but if you go with a 99 or 00 make sure the recalls have been done. The 99's had a recall on the fuel pump and cam chain tensioner and the 00's only had one on the tensioner.

Yeah, what they said. They '99 and '00 models had an aluminum subframe which was a few pounds lighter than the steel one they use now. But I have heard stories of the aluminum subframes cracking and eventually failing.

The hp numbers for the R1 and ZX-10 are the press release figures measured at the crank with "Ram Air" which means they probably tried to simulate 200mph of ram air boost while on the dyno. We will have to see what the real numbers are when the magazines get a hold of them.

Also the Busa is not really the same type of bike as the R1 and ZX, they are more race replica bikes and would more closely compete with the GSXR-1000, which is 100 pounds lighter than the Busa. The Busa is more comfortable on longer rides and with a passenger since it actually has a passenger seat and the fit and finish is a little nicer in my opinion.

The main reason to buy a Busa is that when people see it thay do a double take since it is unique. Also it is great to say you have the fastest production motorcycle in the world

Also don't forget about the 00' subframe.

Thanks for all of the info. I have finally found the one that I want (almost feel I need). It's a 2003 Silver/Silver. Assuming I can get the financing on it where I want it, I will hopefully be riding it as of this Saturday sometime.
