I just got my Bhon Back protector today!! Its quality stuff... I have em Dinese Back protectors now, that dont fit a large guy like me too well. The quality of the harnesses and the padding are quite good, and the protection is above average in comparision to the Dianese... but Im pretty sure that It will serve the purpose!!

Here are a couple of Pics ...

So describe the gear you are wearing and how this fits in with it. I'm curious as to what constitutes a good round up of protective gear. I don't want to suit up like an astornaut, but I would like a reasonable amount of protection.

yah, give us some detailed input. can you tell your wearing it? is it supportive, or does it just feel like extra sloppy weight? Im intrested in getting a setup like this in the future, but sorta fear having restricted in movement.

...Well I would put it this way mate. If your not a very big guy like me... and the dianese fits you well, then the dianese has a harder protection system than bhon! ...also the dianese folds only in one direction, there by protecting your back better.

I prefer the bhon to dianese cause of my body type... and the dianese is very small for me. Where as the bhon covers my back better and fits me better. The harness system of the bhon is a whole lot more better than dianese!!

...nither of the two curtail your moment on the mortorcycle. You dont have to worry about that part!

I wear a Firstgear leatherTEX jacket!! Both the spine guards strap on to the body irrespective of the jacket you are wearing... The have a two point harness... first you put it on like a back-pack, and then there is a velcro strap that comes over your belly!!

You must look like a big Ninja Turtle with that on

Just kidding!! I wish they made their armored shirts in big guy sizes for us!! They look like they would be perfect for hot weather protection.

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I ordered their chest protection yesterday. The the aurmored shirt is a really good product... but, unfotunately the big guys are never taken into consideration when they make pretective clothing.

I'm seriously thinking of starting a business which makes protective motorcycle clothing for plus sized riders...

Shenoy - here is an idea.

Head to the nearest foundry and ask them to do a POP (Plaster of Paris) mould of your torso. You can also get this done at the nearest hospital that has an orthopaedic ward.

Cut it down the side line (so that you have a front and rear panel).

Use the inside of the panels (the concave side) and fill it up with concrete. You will now have two concrete blocks that - when stuck together - will resemble your torso.

Cover the outside of these blocks with fibreglass and allow it to set. Peel it off and treat it in the oven (follow the procedure from manuals) and you will end up with two plates of fibreglass that will fit you like a glove. Make cut-outs for arms, stomach, lovehandles (

) etc. etc. just to add comfort. You can also add moisture absorbing padding inside that will cushion the armor when worn.

Screw on plates of metal to the back, chest area and shoulders of this custom made armor.

This is just an idea - modify it as you see fit.

sounds like a great idea, however---have you seen what happens to fiberglass on impact? Yah, ummm....lets talk about splinter city / I mean this could get seriously ugly. I think a different material would be much better, maybe some sort of plastic, but I will stay away from the fiberglass.

Shenoyp, That Bohn shop is right here in my little town ( Chico, Ca. ) and are direct at actionstation.com nice guy he used to race the Isle of man. Glad to hear how it compares... thanx - K

How about using carbon fibre instead of fibreglass? You can also use fabric reinforced fibreglass (to prevent it from shattering) and wear a protective vest underneath.

Final alternative - urethane foam inner padding surrounded by kevlar and topped off with metal panels...

There are plenty of contractors in the Bangalore area who work with carbon fibre. Your best bet is contacting a good technical institute. Get their mechanical department students to work on it as a "project". Pay them a little bit...

Your Expenses:

* Parts
* Tooling
* Student's Compensation
* Time

Your Gains:

* The know-how
* A fully functional custom body armor
* Infrastructure requirements and familiarity with the process
* Knowledge to strive for repeatability - should you decide to start a fledgling business here in the US.

If you want to start a business - I suggest you dont say anything about it...You can do it here in USA with the help of a US Citizen (for setting up the corporation) and carbon fibre, metal-work, moulds and CNC machines are very easy to get hold of here.

Dont base the business in India unless you can import the machines and training for people there.
