BMC race filter fell apart.

I assume the bike sitting for 4 years had something to do with it but I have never seen a filter fall apart like that.... I can see some pieces in the small clear nipple so it must have happened before I stopped riding. I will clean it up and put a new filter in. Just wanted to share in case someone else is in my shoes. Kids and life got between me and the bike and I should have sold it years ago. Getting it ready to sell now.
EDIT: It's been many years since I have posted here, this post may need to be moved.

That’s just the sealing ‘gasket’ and after four years of no servicing, chances are (that) material will degrade. I’d try a narrow vacuum hose to suck all the debris up and out before firing it up. This can also happen to armor pieces in our jackets. They need checking once in a while too.

Pair valves are blocked off. To be honest, I'm not even sure how old the filter is. It's pretty clean just looking at it but it could be much older than 4-5 years. May be from 2010.... LOL. I recall pulling it up to inspect, looked clean and dropped it back down but I never removed it all the way. It may have been like this for a while. I guess it could have been fuel in the air box. Or high humidity in FL. Always been kept in a garage.

I removed the entire box and will vacuum/blow it out. Going to replace the plugs anyway.

I run that same filter and the gasket is the black foam material that looks like the hard plastic to me.

Probably fuel, there's always a bit of a fine fuel mist spraying around the air box...

i would say - never fuel -

generally said :
if the airfilter box, at a standard engine ! , is wet inside it should be / is oil vapor from the gear vent that has condensed at the inside of the wall of the box.
remember ;) - there is a 10(?) mm rubber vent hose leading up from gearbox to the air box at its rear side ;)

and this moisture in the box is absolutely normal / usual.
- more - if it is not "wet" there but dry like in a "desert" the vent hose might be clogged / kinked what might cause other huge issues to the motor and its gaskets because then the engine can´t "breathe" freely any more.

at a turbo ? - may be fuel what might be caused by the second row of injectors in the plenum ????
but i have no clue about that.

dear?

that piece is only for the scrap box - get a brand new one and clean deeply the airbox before putting in the new one

that scrap-like piece is no longer a filter (air cleaner) but rather an air polluter

no clue what these red small pieces at pic #2 could cause to the cyl / piston if got sucked in .

and - honestly said? I don't even want to know.

The red particles are whatever the material is that they use to bond the plastic/foam to the filter element. It's like a glue or epoxy. It's sticky, that's for sure.

I have a new filter coming and the air box will be cleaned out.
