So I just purchased a low-mount HMF dual system and the appropriate Power Commander for my '07 'busa.

What air filter is recommended? I want to get the most out of the pipe without creating flat spots or any other fuel metering issues, it needs to run as cleanly throughout the powerband as stock.

Thanks,
Blue1

You may not need to change from the stocker

THat would be fine by me.

To be clear, are you saying you think the stock airbox and filter can flow as much air that a stock top-end 'busa motor with an HMF pipe can utilize?

I've read here that the largest restriction in the Busa engine compartment is the factory exhaust header. You're replacing that. I've also read that the factory airbox and filter flow more air than most aftermarket filters. GPW and some others have testing concerning this issue and will hopefully speak up.

I as well as many other use BMC Race filter. I know GPW has 1 he's selling (don't remeber name) but i've heard good tings about them also. some after market filters (K&N comes to mind) i've heard actually have less air flow than stock filter.

Yep the BMC will make a noticeable diff. I run them in all my bikes

But...just like a K&N, if you over-oil them they can restrict airflow.

The stock filter flows better than the K&N.  I switched to the K&N because its less expensive over the life of the bike than changing out paper filters every 6-9 months. If you want to get the most out of the exhaust, you need to get it dyno tuned by a good tuner and not just run the generic HMF PC map.

I should have been more clear in my post.

I want to optimize performance with an full aftermarket exhaust system.  What on the intake side can restrict the potential the exhaust can produce?

Is the airbox restrictive?  If so, how much?

If the airbox isn't restrictive (or a relatively minor mod can open it up sufficiently), then is the stock air filter restrictive?

The goal is to get as much HP and torque across the usable rev range as the exhaust system system can supply with the stock head and throttle bodies.

Has anyone done comprehensive flow tests for these items?  While I appreciate people saying the use a certain filter and it makes a difference, I really would prefer some input with actual, confirmed facts on flow through the basically stock top-end.

Thanks,
Blue1

The short answer is yes...

Search for Small air box mod. and alot say stock filter is OK, But BMC Race will improve Air flow.

Blue1,

I think Cykill is right. Do the airbox mod, install a BMC race air filter, then have the bike dyno'ed and custom mapped as I did. I apologize for my lack of actual, confirmed facts on flow, but my comprehensive flow tester had a sex change and then defected to the former Soviet Union.

Sorry, no flow testing equipment in the garage. I only know what I've learned from guys running Busas on dynos and sharing that info on the board. Post up what you are able to find out.
