Busa for Salt Flats run

Hello,
I'm new to this site and have enjoyed all the information being exchanged here and reading all the posts. My question is kind of broad. My goal is to get my A license at the Flats. What I'm wanting is reccomendations on which year Busa to look for, modifications I will need to run it, which mods are not allowed, any info or guidance would be greatly appreciated. This is not a project I'm taking lightly. I'm early in the planning stages and I want to do this right/safely. I look forward to any help you can give me. Thanx! Stuart.

Welcome to the board. The only help I can be is tell you to go with a 1999 or 2000 because these are the unrestricted models. Even though there are ways around it. It would just be one less thing to worry about. Let the bike run the way it was made to without tricking the computer. Anyone that has done the TRE mod will be able to explain this and tell you if there are any ill effects.

Stuart: I answered your PM but I can answer questions just as easily here. Go to www.scta-bni.org for the Bonneville website. All the motorcycle rules and records are listed. The classes are confusing but basically the Busa fits in the modified (M) class in either 1350cc or 1650cc maximum displacements. You can make any engine modifications as long as the engine is not larger than the chosen class. There is a Production 1350cc class which allows engine modifications but you have to run a stock exhaust and bodywork. Going 200 MPH gets you an A license. To join the 200 MPH Club requires that you set a record over 200. I am proud to say I am a member. A well tuned stock bike will go 190 (altitude is 4200&#39

It takes 190 HP to exceed 200. Good Luck

Any year bike will work. The TRE fools the computer into using 5th gear data when the bike is in 6th so that the rev limiter will not cut in. The records are difficult as we have a four year headstart but if you merely want to go 200 build a 1397 with cams, 13-1 CR. headwork, and a pipe. Gearing comes in lesson two. Lots of fun, I hope this info helps.

Thank you for the responses!

So to break 200 mph on a Busa I will have to be in the modified class or can it be done in production class? If I go to the 13:1 pistons, can I run it on the gas they supply or will I have to go to a fuel? I have sooo much to learn...
Thank you for the patience with my questions! Stuart

Cache:We use a 19T front to go 220 with stock wheels. Above 225 we us a custom RC wheel which allows sprockets down to 30. I just got a 20T front and will try it this year. It brings the chain very close to the clutch pushrod. For Project 260 I have an overdrive 6th gear which is 12% taller than stock.
Imstu: it is possible to go 200 in Production class ( I have done it twice) but because you are limited to 1350cc maximum and a stock exhaust it is hard. I have a new engine combo I am trying this year. We will see. To just go 200 and not try to set a record a 1397 will do it easily and still be streetable. ERC race gas is used at Bonneville and they have octanes to 118. No problem.

thanks for the replies Larry. A close friend of mine that got me into racing Busas says he knows you. Knows, knows of, I dunno.. Mike Kassinger... anywhoo.. I always like to know what goals racers have every year, so what are YOUR goals Larry?

chris.

Cache: Sorry I don't know Mike. Racing goals never change, just want the bikes to go faster. Bonneville is the perfect place for the Busa. It is powereful, stable, and aerodynamic. In the last few years more people have come out to give Bonneville a try. Safest place to "sit on the seat and twist the tube". Like any form of motorsport, to be competitive requires time and money, but less so at Bonneville. A stock ride for 5 miles at 190 is still a rush. Hope you guys can make it.

Hi Larry. What do you have to do to get licenses in the different classes? With other types of racing you have to go up one class at a time and prove proficiency in each class. Is there a minimum number of runs you must do in each class/speed range?
I'm also curious...how much horsepower do you figure it will take to go 260? (I assume that's what you are refering to with 'Project 260&#39

What about aerodynamics...Busa fairings or streamliner? Fascinating subject!

imstu: Bonneville licensing is very easy. One run at 125, one at 150, and one at 175, one under 200, and then you are allowed to go as fast as you can. The first three runs are on the "short course" 3 miles total. You must exceed 175 on the short course before you are allowed on the "long course" which is 7 miles total of which 2 to 5 are timed.
To go 260 will take about 550 HP with aero bodywork. Go to www.precisionchassis.com and click on current projects. Scroll down past the Mustang to see my bike. Or come to the Flats this summer. Larry

May take you up on it.

I have a question a little off the path of the flats. I was reading the posts and you talked about the rev limiters. I just bought a 2003 busa and was wondering if this has a limiter on the revs and how fast it will be in stock form. A few guys in my area have r 6's and zx-6r's. Any worries?

That is an easy answer. Absolutely not. The bike is limited in top speed, not acceleration. It will spank those bikes outright.
