The man convicted of abducting, raping and slaying 11-year-old Carlie Brucia will be sentenced today in Sarasota.

A jury has recommended by a vote of 10-2 that Joseph Smith be executed. A judge is required by law to give great weight to that recommendation when he makes his ruling Wednesday.

During a hearing last month, Smith tearfully apologized for his crimes. He told the judge that he took large amounts of heroin and cocaine and tried to kill himself before he abducted Carlie on Feb. 1, 2004.

Smith said he didn't remember much about that day and asked the judge to spare him for the sake of his family.

Carlie's abduction was caught by a security camera and aired nationally. Her body was found four days after her disappearance on the grounds of a Sarasota church.

I can understand your frustration and wish for this guy to be executed; however, consider this. Convicts HATE rapists and child molesters. A life in prison would cause this guy much more pain and suffering than the death penalty.

I'll believe that going the the process of hearings, appeals, re-trials, and holding someone for several years is more expensive than jailing them for life, but if we were to pronounce sentence, and then carry it out in timely manner, it would be cheaper to just kill them.

Well... It looks like everyone will get their wish. He'll spend time in prison and will fry. Federal Law requires at least one appeal in all cases where punishment is death. He'll get to sit in jail and meet his new boyfriend(s) while he waits out the appeal then he gets to fry. Unfortunately, this can sometimes take a very long time and we get to pay for his keep.

Lets all take a minute to realize how precious life is and how much are daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, loved ones really means to us. Never take each other for granted cause when we least expect it, ...there gone,... forever.
