Cb450 to a busa?

I have ridden a 1972 Honda CB450 and was wonderin if a busa might be a good idea. I'm very confident in my abilities "not arrogant," but confident. I have researched this bike for about three years and am confident that i would be able to control it. The CB450 may not be a sportbike, or a big bike at all for that matter. I am also prepared to take it slow and get used to it before i do anything crazy on it. I am about 5' 10" and 145 lbs. and am highly considering getting one this summer. Once again i've researched for about three years. Any input would be great!

The biggest "X" factor keeping most new riders from the Busa is quite simply....

The Cost of Insurance, not ability! If you think your ready that's half the battle. The busa is going to be heavier than what your use to but not to worry. With the right amount of time you will be up and running in nothing flat. Words of caution... Prepare to be blown away.. That simple twist of the wrist can get you in more trouble than almost any other factor. Do you have any experience with this style of bike? Why the biggest, baddest, boy on the block for your (I assume) first sport type bike? Just trying to feel out your question........

Moto- Man you bring back memories. I had a 71 CB450 and back in the day I remember thinking what a big motorcycle it was. I loved that bike. Smooth as silk, twin cams and it hauled the mail! It was almost as quick as my CB750. Well fast foward to today, you may have that same feeling all over again. If you had no trouble riding that red(or blue) honda, then you shouldn't be too intiminated by a stock Busa.Same feeling of awe and puts a smile on your face from ear to ear. Just don't grab a handfull, especially around the turns.Show some respect, and you'll be a pro in no time. Just like back in 1972! Thanks for the memories!

Dude for someone who has been researching the Busa for "three years" you have a lot of Newbie questions in your other posts.. Are you a Troll or what?

The Bike is awsome and deserves respect. My 17 year old son rides it as well as his 06 Gixxer 600. He respects both.

Ok, this is where I get scared - Maybe you just worded things wrong, but what do ya mean by saying "Before I do anything crazy on it"

To me, and I may be alone in my thinking, the Busa is not a bike that you make future plans to do anything crazy on. Either you have the ability to ride her at a certain limit, or you dont...but I never use the word Crazy & motorcycle in the same breath...as it may be my last.

Stay safe,

John

go ahead...get one...you can always sell the parts to org members

just kidd'in...ks is right about insurance, it can be a real killer money wise...how long you been ride'in?....the busa can bit ya real quick (split second) before you know it...if you do get one go slow and DON"T do anything crazy

Sorry about that you guys, i did word that wrong. I don't plan to do anything crazy, "stupid" on this bike. And yes i do in fact at this very point in time own a 1972 or 1971 CB450 Honda. It is not in the greatest shape in the world but it is a great bike. The good thing about it is the fact that my dad helped me get it running a couple of years ago. But unfortunately terrible things happen. My dad passed on several weeks ago. It was terrible news, but he will always be loved and sorely missed. And by saying that i post a lot of newbie q's. Clarify that, please. I have been riding for quite some time and do not want to be considered a newbie. Also no, i have never owned a speedbike of my own previousely. But i believe that with respect and control, you can conquer almost anything you desire.
"We receive strength by he who empower's us."
I haven't ridden a streetbike much, although i have ridden a dirtbike for almost 6 years. And on the dirtbike and the CB450 i have never had a wreck. I believe in having fun, but i do not like situations that are out of my control.

You guys are great!  Keep it up!!!!

Going from your 1971 or 72 450 to a Busa is a huge jump.
JUst the fact that you don't know the year or where to find it out on the steering head tells me a lot.
Your CB is probably pushing out 20-25 HP.
You said 145 lbs, 5' 10".
Do you really need 160 HP at your riding level ?
Get a Suzuki 600 or 750. (Both still over 100 hp)
and if you live 20,000 + miles on one of those consider a Busa.
The Busa is a extremely large Sportbike.
I don't use 30 % of it's potential half of the time just cause I know I want to live and ride another day.
I waited till I was 36 and had 30 years total of Dirt and Road riding before I considered it as a smart thing to do.

on the CB series of the 70's it was.
Owned a 1974 CB 550 K.
Girlfreind of mine has a 1972 CB 500. to this day,
and guess whom the chief mechanic of that is.
Love the old Honda's.

As long as you respect the speed you'll be fine. A Busa will stop faster and track much, much better than a 70's era bike. The only trouble you may ecounter is the Busa's ability to mask it's speed. You just don't feel the speed until you're going 90 mph or so. This can be a problem on off ramps.

I'm curious how many miles you've put on that CB450? It sounds like you might be fairly new to street riding. No offense, but a CB450 is almost in the scooter-class, compared to a Busa. Having dirt bike time is a plus though. And it sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders.

A Busa is only going to go as fast as you allow it, but it accelerates so quickly and smoothly, you'll be very, very surprised. Be prepared to be initially scared, even at moderate acceleration levels. Realize you're entering a world nothing like you're used to. Twist the grip on a Busa, (like you do on your CB450), and your speed-o will be in the triple digit range - in a few short seconds. Speed is there in a blink of an eye and your reaction time (and good judgement) had better be keeping up! The potential for a novice rider to get hurt or killed on a Busa is certainly there. Insurance companies are well aware of this.

Where you might have had several seconds of reaction time on your CB450, the Busa's quick acceleration might only leave you a split second to react. Or you may look down at the speed-o and realize you're entering a corner at 90 (Whoa! You thought you were only doing 50!). Will you be ready to lean the Busa over at a 40+ degree angle and drag a knee through the turn? Is your skill level ready for these situations? It better be!

Two suggestions:

1. If you do decide to buy a Busa, pace your learning curve very, very slowly. It's unfortunate fact that unskilled riders have a tendency to get hurt or eliminate themselves.

2. A better (and safer) bet might be to pick up a 750 first and put a year or two on that.

Either way, best of luck!

WTF? Back off guys. Atleast he is asking valid questions and is concerned BEFORE he buys one. He is just asking some simple questions. Not everyone jumps on one and runs WO as soon as they sit on it! Give the guy a chance.

While I agree with just about everything you say, he's not exactly going from a scooter to a Busa.

Your CB is probably pushing out 20-25 HP.
Actually about 45 hp with a top speed of 110 mph. Speed aside, for normal riding the Busa is 100X safer and easier to ride than any bike out of the 70's. My little '76 CB360T was a death trap on the highway with it's narrow tires, poor handling and poor braking.

The Busa is a extremely large Sportbike.
Wet weight of a CB450 is around 450 lbs. which isn't that far off compared to a Busa and I guarantee the Busa is more balanced and carries its weight better. Just about any bike from the 70's will make a Busa feel like a flea.

Perfect next bike for this guy is a SV650. Even if he chooses a Busa he's still better off with his experience than the "I can drift a Z28" or "I played college basketball" numbnuts who put their Busas through a meat grinder within weeks.

If you want a Busa, get a Busa. I don't know what you could possibly need 3 years to "research" the Busa. Like you've been told above, you need to be able to make quick decisions on the Busa. Three years and still no decision?

After reading your first post, I thought...well get another Toe-Tag...

After reading your second post, I have a different opinion. First, Im sorry for the passing of your father as of recent...my deepest reguards. And after reading that your father helped you in getting the old CB running, it sorta tugged at my heart a little - family & motorcycles mean a lot to me & form a strong unique bond.

6 years on a dirtbike is some serious time on 2 wheels. I think a few days on the dirt builds more experience on a bike, than a few weeks riding on the Hwy. True, on the dirt you dont deal with road hazzards, but the control and limits of a bike are really tested on the dirt. And some people never learn some techniques they could have learned if they spent some quality dirt-time.

Anyhow, your opinion of your bike and your skills seem humble in nature, and I say get the Busa...do it right now, and dedicate the First ride to your Father

Enjoy the Busa and be realistic with your skill level and you should enjoy your new addition for many years to come.
