chain and sprocket

I have 21k on my bike now so I know that I'm real close to needing a new one. Is there a way to know when its def time to get a new chain and sprocket? Besides the sporcket starting to curve.

What should I look for in a new chain and sprocket? +1,2,3 ? and how easy is it to install?
 
a good sign of a worn chain is having to adjust it after every ride, all so grab hold of it on the back of the rear sprocket and see how far you can lift it off the teeth, it really shouldnt move much at all. As for replacement personally i keep stock settings , its quick enough for me. :beerchug:
 
21K I'd say your probably due. If your sprocket teeth are showing noticeable wear, you can bet the chain is in as bad of shape. And if you replace one, always replace the other.
As for the larger rear sprocket, that's a matter of personal preference and usage. Totally up to what you want from, and to use your bike for.:thumbsup:
 
Chain specs...if it exceeds these limits...you're due :rulez:

There's really no time limit on when to replace chain and sprokets, it all depends on your riding habits. If you're an aggressive rider or you do a lot of clutch popping, and poor maintainance to your chain then of course it will wear sooner than someone who isn't as hard on them. There are guys on here that have the original chain and sprokets with thousands of miles on them, then there are others who have to replace them in a very short period of time.

another thing to consider is upgrading the cush drive while you have the rear wheel off to change that sprocket...its worth the 48$
 
Just orded mine the other day.... Only has 7000kms far amount of slop in cush drive.

i just put a 43 rear on and i love it. i took the advice of members and bought an impact wrench which made the install a breeze. i used a motionpro chain tool i got off ebay pretty cheap and borrowed a friend's grinder to grind the rivets off the old chain. whole thing fairly easy

i bought a 1/2 electric impact from harbor freight. they were on sale. worked perfect to remove the front sprocket and rear axel.

stock gearing is 17 teeth in front and 40 rear. Going up teeth in the rear or down teeth in the front makes you quiker off the line. i chose to go up 3 in the rear vs. going down one in the front because i read it is easier on your chain. if feels great to me, my speedometer is about 12% to fast but that doesnt bother me

I removed my front sprocket with a 35mm socket at the end of a 1/2 " drive. Didn't have to strain at all. This was on an '06, don't know what year you have. The '06 has a locking screw that removes with an allen wrench and the you just spin the nut off with the 35mm socket.
 
:thumbsup:Parts arrived, Install a 43 tooth in the rear as well. LOVE it..... second and third gear has really "come alive".! Also.. Like no back lash in the final drive, with the new Cush drive. SENSEI dampers where very tight, needed a small dab of lube and lean on it to ease the sprocket hub into the wheel. Was wondering,,, Are OEM dampers an interference fit aswell? Oh..... Thanks Greg at boost by smith.
Ordered new brake lines and pads as soon as i got home from my test ride. I believe i am addicted now. lol
