Changing oil before winter storage?

Is it a good idea to change oil before winter storage because of old oil containing acid if you leave it sit for several months?

Yep, not so much with synthetic but any 'used' oil contains more bad stuff than new oil. Also, with new oil, you don't have to change it in the fall before riding. Very long storage periods require fogging cylinder oil to be applied for best results and startup months later.

I am glad I don't live where that is a problem! I try to ride mine every month even if it is just arround the block in the Winter. :poke:

you dont HAVE to change it before you store it. You do HAVE to change it at the end of winter though.

I leave mine in over the winter. I start it up whenever the weather is above freezing (every 2 weeks or so) to keep it all lubricated and then change the oil in the spring.
The old oil just sits in the bottom of the pan if you don't run the engine, so new oil or not won't matter much.
It will get moisture in it just sitting or when it cools off like it does when I run it, so that is why I change it at the end of the winter instead of the beginning.

If you're gonna store it drain the oil. After winter change the oil filter and put fresh oil in.
