Chatterbox questions

For you guys that run Chatterboxes - I am considering buying two. One for my helmet and the other for my fiance (passenger). My two questions are, how hard is it to install these units on helmets, and how hard is it to remove the big transmitter thing (for lack of a better word) from my helmet when I am riding solo?

If you want it just for a passenger, don't buy two. I almost made this same mistake. The best one to buy is the GMRS-X2. When you buy it you will get a headset for your helmet with it. Buy an extra headset and an extension cord. After you install your headset, put the other one in your girl's hemet. Now attach the extension cord to her headset and the chatterbox auxillary port on the X2. Works like magic, plus you can listen to music as well. My kit also came with a push-to-talk button. My wife likes to use that so we just attached it to her headset cord with tape and she slips it over her finger to keep the button handy. I had the same plan as you but luckily, I talked to the chatterbox rep at the Dallas motorcycle show and he steered me the right path. I'm not sure if the other models will have the extra port to plug her into but the X2 is around $300 and it's a very good sytem. Also good for bike-to-bike communications if other riders have them. Buying one X2 and the extra headset will still be cheaper than buying two of the cheaper chatterbox models. plus the range is better with the X2. You will love this set-up and wonder how you ever survived without one!! I use mine every time I get on the bike.

Oh yeah, for your other question, the chatterbox will slip right off in a couple of seconds but you will probably want to leave the speakers in. They are a little harder to remove. But, I almost guarantee you will leave it on all the time if you like riding with music. I use mine even when I'm just going to work (3-4 miles). Either way, the chatterbox comes of easily. Good luck

Looks like okoutlaw got you fixed up! Simple to remove, push release, slide unit off, & un-plug. Every helmet is a little different so can't promise it'll be easy on the one you have. HJC helmets have the cutouts already built into them..... Oh yea, almost forgot the GMRS-X1 (okoutlaw the X2 is a FRS radio) is the top of the line unit with a 5 mile range. Be sure when buying to get the current design. Alot of dealers are passing the first generation units out at good prices, but these lack the features of the 2nd generation. So make sure and get the latest generation. Some differences, no PTT output for passenger, only two-buttons on the control face, & most important they come with subpar speakers/mouth piece (noticeable difference in sound quality, thickness of cords not up to current model configuration)....

Great stuff - thanks for the information! I told my fiance' about this plan and she said "great, now I can tell you to slow down and not pass so many cars!"

Maybe I should rethink this plan afterall

thanks for setting me straight ks. I just started rambling on when I saw the first post without actually looking at my chatterbox! It is a pretty good set-up and I couldn't live without mine now....

For just rider to wife communication I use the HJC-50 from chatterbox. Basically just a smaller box that attaches to the outside. I leave it on for my solo riding, 90% of the time, and have no problems with it. Cheap and works great! I think I paid less than 80 for everything.

Well this post has surfaced again.... Ive used three different versions of chatterbox.

The tandum 50/90 models are nice if you dont intend to talk to another moving bike. They are rider/passenger music for both and cell phone capable. PASSENGER CAN HEAR/TALK on cell at same time. BE carefull there.

The X1 and X2 are a little bit larger, offer stereo sound, rider/passenger communications as well as bike to bike, passenger to passenger etc etc. Phone same.

The x2 and x2 (2mile 5mile) are both very nice. You usually are never 5 miles away. But funny is most other riders DONT FRIGGIN have one. Great for music.

Get a NOJ quiet rider that fits onto the bottom of your helmet to keep the wind out. Then MY FRIEND THEN the chatterbox is perfect. without it your good to talk and hear at 55/60 mph. with the NOJ 100 easy and clear.

X1 and X2 are HUGH on your helmet. Clipped mine on my belt. My son has a two way radio that you usually see at the fair/mall and it works with it as well.

NOJ needed. Also check the for sale section / ebay. Their is always a new model for sale.
