Streight up on level ground. Oil will not show at all on side stand.

A teloscoping inspection mirror (large) makes it easier and safer. Just sit on the bike, stand it up and put the mirror down by the sight glass.

Yeah, if you fill it to the line while it's on the side stand, you'll put too much oil in there.
