Clutch Lever = Black Fingers

It seems that over the past two months, my clutch fingers are getting black from the clutch lever. My wife's Suzuki 650F is doing the same thing now. What is causing this and how can I keep it from continuing?

If thoroughly cleaned the clutch lever but it still happens, is there a special cleaner that I need?

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated, I'm getting tired of having black fingers after riding an hour or two.

It is the aluminum, rubbing off on your fingers. There are only four options that come to mind to quickly remedy that situation, and that is put a clear coat on them, deal with it, where balck gloves(ATGATT) or get a new set of anodized levers.

You guys reguarly ride that long without gloves? Get some gloves!! Save your wive's hands...keep em soft!!!

Most folks wear gloves as they protect you hands from bugs, rocks and if you have a spill. If gloves aren't the answer you're looking for, there's always covers.

I'm kinda leaning toward the 20" tassles for you. :poke:

Gloves is always my first answer but the answer you want to read is a good metal polish/ cleaner like Mothers.

Here's another suggestion for wearing good gloves and making this a null point. If you ever fall, your natural tendency will be to put your hands down to catch yourself, depending upon your attitude and if you have time. Road rash on the palms of your hands... I apologize for dogging you. At least consider wearing gloves--both of you. Alan

no one seemed to have asked but are those stockers??? if not what brand???

Oh !! yeah gloves be a good idea ..

Wear gloves. I found from experince that getting the black from the pavement hurts. I still have a scar on my hand, the only part that wasn't covered.

If you have the stock levers it might be a poor anodizing job. Its made even worse if you store the bike outside open to the elements like the sun. The sun especially will break down most poorly applied finishes quickly. You can get the levers powdercoated and clearcoated for probably under $20 a set. Check local shop in your area.

That's just funny. FYI, alot of colored leather gloves will leave stains on your hands when you sweat. So maybe some liners are the answer for those worried about a little dirt. Me, I accept that bikes are not cars, and you tend to get a little dirtier when riding one. I use this amazing product to deal with it: SOAP.
