Clutch Mod?

Which piece are you guys using. I have read that this is necessary mod to prevent damage to the stock piece.

Some are welding the stock unit.  There is also a drop in ring to lock up the stock parts.

The ultra mod part NightCrawler motioned seems to be the preferred method, but I have seen quite a few welded ones. Brock used to sell welded stockers. I don’t know of anyone running the lockup ring but it “shouldâ€￾ work the same as a welded one.     I've running the Brock Ultra piece for almost 2 years and 200+ passes.

But, how does this mod affect street performance?

I have heard of excessive handle pressure and locking up the rear on downshifts?

It will lock the rear a bit easier on downshift. I don't ever have a problem as I always ease the clutch out when downshifting.

Unless you are drag racing it, leave the hub stock!

Got the ultra mod and cushion kit coming.

What is the difficulty level for the install?

I have rebuilt car engines and rearends, but I am still learning bikes.

Any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Any special tools?

Pretty much straight foward. You will need to install a clutch slave support or a billet sprocket cover to keep from breaking the stock cover.

You are welcomed to PM me if you need any help. I installed mine about a month ago but foolishly browsed the instructions instead of actually reading them. Because of that, if you do something wrong chances are I'd be able to help you because I probably made the same mistake.

Oh ... level of difficulty ... it'll take about an hour to complete. The key is getting it right the FIRST time and not having to keep backtracking.

Just a tip. You should have TWO fiber plates left over after installing the cushion mod. The inner-most fiber plate with the large hole AND a regular thin fiber plate.

Also, when you install the cushion, the FIRST plate to install will be a steel plate ... NOT a fiber one.

I had brocks regular billet hub for over 60K miles with no problems. Finaly swapped to the ultra light. Brock makes great products and stands behind them.

What about tools? I have all the regular tools and air tools to rebuild cars, but the suzuki manual shows a couple specialty tools for holding the clutch.

What do you use in place of these?

I used an impact. I know some have welded a handle on to an old clutch plate. Suzuki4life was selling them

yep if you get stiffer springs you WILL break the sprocket cover...a "billet" one is the only answer.

Superkoas is selling them the cheapest right now. $145

I didn't use any "special" tools at all. I used an allen wrench from the tool kit to dig out the plates. For the big nut which holds the hub, I used a bar through the rear wheel to prevent it from spinning and used a torque wrench to get the nut off and put it back on.

Thanks for the info guys

I ordered the slave support with the other parts, been reading you guys other posts.

Just wasn't sure about torqueing the hub nut.

that is the exact reason behind the wrench...proper torque on the clutch hub nut and safely removing it without an impact. Many have shattered clutch hubs by using screwdrivers to keep them still.

Turns out I'm on my way to take my motorcycle drivers test (finally legal) and my bike starts making this noise like a bunch of marbles behind my clutch case! Luckily there is a bike shop a few blocks up the road so I push it up there. Well it seems that someone else must have been in there (previous owner) and didn't snug or use locktite on a few bolts, and one of them let loose and busted the whole clutch assembly, basket and all, along with putting a hole in the clutch case.
Anyone know where I can get a decent unit for a decent price? I don't drag but I would like to get better than stock parts.
Thanks anyone,
Shawn

Sorry to hear about your clutch.

As for the people that gave input, the clutch mods are in, that was easy, why do people have trouble with this?
Thanks for the input.
