To look upon anothers wife with envy is bad and so to prevent it from happening they ask them to cover.
Lets not get into a religious discussion on it as I agree some is taken too far with the Burkas and all that but a veil and long skirt/dress to cover the face and legs can now be understood heh..

Just some tit-for-tat thought...but would it not be just as bad for a female to look at another's husband with envy? I've often wondered why the double standard for females in the Muslim religion.....I understand it's been this way for a LONG time but this is 2010. Just saying....why are the male's allowed to strip down to bottoms at the beach while women still wear the burkas and such out in the water. Just part of that religion I guess that I don't understand.

Jds I agree with you 100% on theory but this is their culture so I do not question it. You must understand though that the vast majority of women who still follow these traditions do it voluntarily. It is only a slight minority that are forced to obey. I know this because I travel and regularly see in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq women in bikinis and open face in public.
Also not to many women envy fat old arabs anyway...

if you wanna discuss it further we can . let us just not detract from this thread.
