cowling question

So i was helping my buddy change the oil on his busa and noticed he had a plastic piece right under the nose that mine does not have. Its right above the front fender and covers the bottom side of the nose.
Now i know i have not had this piece since i bought it but why would you remove it? Does it serve a purpose?
Im not sure if I should buy one or just live without it. I have never noticed any thing wrong with not having it but now that i know its not there it bugs me...
Let me know what yall think...

Get one and put it one your Busa. Keep some of the road debris from hitting things under there.
