Cracked casings!?!

Just got a 2000 busa with 3000 miles from a friend. He said he had a problem with the casings cracking on the right side. He had it fixed twice, now it's back to square one. Is it expensive to fix, has anyone had or heard of this problem? I'm new to this so I need all the help I can get! Thanks.

Did that year have the starter problem?? I think.??? Someone will speak up and know the answer. And Welcome to the board.

nope...at least, I don't think it had a starter problem. I believe the 01 an 02's had that.

To my knowledge, these are the problems the 99-00 models have:

weak welds on the subframe (made of aluminum instead of the current steel)
cam chain tensioners (we all know this one)
kinked fuel lines
Some fuel pump issues
Paint peeling under/around gas tank (mostly noted on European models in colder climates)

Just what I remember...I think.

I think my friend did mentioned something about a starter problem but I have to check on it. Also, any other problems i have to worry about this year and how can I it taken care of? Thanks

see list above.

cam chain tensioner - run VIN at dealer to see if any service records exist for this particular prob. If none, you can always switch over to a manual tensioner.

subframe - change to a steel one

fuel lines - replace or if you can, get some braided lines to replace 'em. Any hose shop should be able to do this.

fuel pump - change out with a newer one, change out filter

paint issues - repaint.

really? Huh....would ya look at that. Ya learn somethin new everyday. I thought the starter problem wasn't as big a problem for the 99-00 models as it was for the 01-02 models.

Duly noted...

There is an aftermarket sleeve availableto help prevent the cracking in the first place and at least one guy out there in the business of repairing the case 1/2 after they are broken .

I'll post how to contact that shop tomorrow when I get back online unless someone does before hand .

Ifound out the previous owner had the starter replaced as a recall then he wrecked it and had the starter problem again and again. Replaced the starter at least twice. I believe this is problem via the cracked casings. He mentioned something about the teeth on the starter breaking off; anyone know how to solve this problem?
