cruizin rpm

I like cruzing watching the mpg estimator max out at 50mpg, knowing im saving money on gas. I was wondering what rpm is to low to ride on. I try to keep the rpm's at least at 3k. Does anyone know if lugging it under 3k is hard on the engine?

I do 200-400 miles of commuting a week and a large part of it is between 70-80mph.

I average a steady 45mpg between 3500-4000rpm.

i have done 50mpg on my 03 once in 3-1/2 years and my 08 is maybe 29-31mpg max.i bought it to beat the crap out of

There was a discussion a while back about this. I think the consensus was that mpg went up if you were in the range of 3k-4k when cruising.

Too @#$%^&* funny!! I'm a bike hypocondriac and just want to know if it is bad to run the motor under 3k.

Thats interesting and good to know, i'll vary the rpm's a bit and see what difference in gas milage i get

Per fill-up I average about 230 miles. I could probably go a bit further but the gas station is easier for me to hit on the way home, so I usually fill up then (whether I'm really empty or not).

My optimum MPG was..

6th gear.. 80mph 47miles per gallon.. (Las Vegas to Phoenix) approx 300 miles each way.

I've had my busa since I bought it new in 2000 and on some roads with 45-55mph speed limits i'll cruise with the bike under 3000rpm (2500-280rpm). Roll it on here and there to pass cars quickly and stay out of the "Death spot". Heard it's not good to lug it from that low but so far she's ok with almost 30k on the clock. Motor sounds top notch with no knocking or ticking. Valves in check. Just changed my clutch a few months ago and the original fibers/steels didn't look too bad and she has been well used when the environment is less cluttered with traffic/cop potential.

As for milege i don't got no exact figures. Fill the tank full, travel well over 100miles range, still a quarter left when I park it for the night even when naughty in a few areas I travel. Only when I REALLY go nutty on it is when I have to fill her up coming back into my city but these are spots that are usually 40miles away from home before the fun even starts.

Been using 89 rating Sunoco for the majority of the bikes life too. So farry so goody. Used Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic Automobile (not motorcycle) oil for quite awhile too before trying Royal Purple this season. Purple did pretty good but think i'll give amsoil a try next season.

This is funny !! (I'm with you on being a Bike Hypocodriac,"I don't remember it doing this",lol) When I can't have "fun" I do see how many miles I can go per gallon, but it's addicting !! Last week I finaly changed the speedo back to miles (from mpg). I think I missed the whole month of August, lol. Since I haven't been paying attention I've been getting 28-34, but my bike shifts SO MUCH BETTER now !!

Do you get the 5'th to 6'th snag when your shifting ? I don't know why, but my bike seems to like it the harder I ride it ?

This is why I asked a second question in my thread "muffler", I forgot what was normal mpg.

The weird thing about my experience is...all else being the same...my mileage stayed exactly the same going from a 40 to a 43t rear sprocket. Something has to be different but I don't know what! I ride the same, same gas, oil(Castrol GPS), tires, style....oh well.

After I posted this I thought...the one known difference has to be the average overall RPM's of the motor(higher in my case)....so....I think that demonstrates that the Hayabusa motor might be just as efficient(or even more so) at a slightly higher average RPM....over the span of a typical ride. I think that's significant because most people assume the higher the overall ratio...the higher the MPG...because the lower the RPM. This possibility is about the middle RPM ranges, obviously not lugging nor <6000 stuff.

As to the below 2K question. These engines have a lot of torque. It doesn't seem to bother them to lope along at 2K. I have seen nothing in the way of warnings or written concerns about doing engine damage at low RPMs after break-in. I hope so because I regularly keep my revs down at the 2K levels to save on gas. I find it doesn't mind a roll on from those speeds, but if I need to power up for a quick pass.....I downshift like 4 gears......lol.

Downshift 4 gears?

I'm still getting used to the power difference from my old bike which was a kat and these bikes seem to make torque just sitting in the driveway

Will a mode C help for the 08, I dont have MPG gauge on mine so I have to estimate.

But how much do you have on a tank once the red light goes off?

I've just started driving a busa (switched from a 92 600cc shadow) If I don't lug her around I can't keep close to the speed limit. Strangely enough shifting up is the only way to keep it slowed down. I've only opened up the throttle all the way once it ended up with me going 150mph in the dark with only my low beams on(didn't know it had high beams). It was scary. And what was worse is that it didn't even start to take off untill 140. I don't think I'll be doing that again any time soon. And my bike is bone stock I don't see how you guys can handle turbos and all that.
