Custom Wheels

I didn't get much of a response in the Mod forum so I will repost here.

Hey all;
I'm kinda new here so I hope this is the proper place to pose this question. There seems to be a lot of extremely knowledgeable folks on this board so hopefully someone can help. I am a CNC machinst/programmer with lots of CAD/CAM software at my disposal and I got this idea in my head to build my own custom wheels for my Busa. My problem is I am only a machinist not an engineer and when it comes to the engineering I am uneducated. I want to build a polished aluminum wheel but I dont know what kind of material is used in wheels(especially on a 200MPH bike) If it is just 6061-t6 billet what kind of treatment is required to make it stand up to real world condition. Will just anodizing work?? Also dimensions. Where can a guy find engineering dimensions or standards for motorcycle wheels? I would really appreciate any help anyone has to offer. Links, specs or advice from an engineer would be awesome. Sorry for the long winded post.

keep the shiny side up!!

Consider this, you must #1 get the specs from each individual manufacturer. 2nd you would have to have extremely strict quality control and testing methods. Because if there are any flaws on the wheel. You can imagine the worst that can happen. Good luck, but you need some capital to do these things becasue if not you open yourself up to plenty of liability!

I thought about that my friend, I was just hoping that if I could get some specs I could see if it was even feesable to do with the equipment I have available. I am not in a huge hurry this could be a couple year project. I would need to get CSA approval and do a tonne of research. And even find out how to test them properly. Funny thing is I would have to start a Ltd liabilty company and sell the first set to myself to cover my ass.lol

I'm hoping maybe transport canada can help.

All that I have owned and been exposed to were machined from 6061 T-6 billet. I visited the RC Components factory in KY a few weeks ago and got a dealer's tour of their facility. Although I didn't specifically ask them about heat treatment, I saw no heat treatment operations in their production process.

Your project sounds ambitious (I salute you). If I were doing it, I would REALLY want to get my hands on a known, good example of an equivalent billet wheel for measurement of the critical dimensions, wall thicknesses, etc. Good luck! :)

dood, I dont think there are many cycle manufacturers forging thier own wheels? they are all cast or spun. I know marchesini forges magnesium wheels, I think PVM and marvic as well. RC components forges aluminum, OZ, Hi Point too. I dont understand? if your going through all that work why you would want to make a wheel you could prolly buy for less than it would cost to make with little added performance benifits? why not forged magnesium? as for specs, bust out the micrometer....
