Desert Eagle

Anyone own one? I was down at a local shop picking up some shells, and as always decided to take a look in the case. Very clean all black Magnum Research Desert Eagle chambered in .50AE for around $850. I'm partial to heavy guns, my favorite at the moment is a Ruger Super RedHawk .44 mag my father gave me.

I know ammo is around $2 a shot, and can be hard to find. Just wondering about reliability and shoot-ability. It seems like a really good deal, might wind up picking it up unless you guys warn against it.

Excellent gun super reliable. Very expensive to shoot. YouTube has lots of vids. I love mine!

super reliable? dont think so... cant put 500 rounds thru it without something breaking, they are notorious for failing and parts can be a PITA to get (atleast up here in canada) expencive to shoot, but rolling your own will cut that cost down significantly

as some one that works on weapons for a living....... i would never own one, maybe for a mantle piece or something to show off to your buddies with. just my 2 cents.

I have never had a problem with mine. I shoot it plenty.

Ok, 2-1 so far. What pieces have you found to break a lot? Also, is yours a magnum research, Israeli arms, or another manufacturer? The more info I can get to make an informed decision, the better.

i just guess with my experience with them they are unreliable. i was on the marksmanship team for a year, shot and worked on them as well....and we sure do know how to abuse a gun hahaha. you give a gun to a Marine and he'll show you how to make it or break it.

imi and magnum research are essentially the same company, magnum research bought imi and all of thier equipment, as far as what breaks, its the goofy setup with the recoil springs, they hav e to be pretty much custom tailored to each gun, even new from the factory a deagle can have jamming issues, no only are there the issues with the reliability, and cost, but there is also the fact that its just such a big, loud, powerful round to shoot, like the s@w 500 or 460, unlessy youve got hands like baseball gloves on ya, and the arms to match, your hands and wrists will be kinda sore after 15-25 rounds, to me, a deagle is a pull it out a few times a year at the range, as a lookey what i got, but if you want something to pump thousands of rounds thru, i wouldnt recomend it

The biggest fault I have heard is the recoil. If you not big enough and strong enough in the wrist and forearms you will cause some jamming issue. Especially with the .50 AE. You have to be able to absorb enough of the recoil to let the action do its job.

The .50 caliber isn't a magnum round, the .44 is, and it's got more knockdown power even with a slightly smaller diameter. The .500 Smith&Wesson is the only magnum round in .5 diameter.
Hardly matters, you don't want to be on the wrong end of any of the 3:laugh:

.50ae generally have slightly lower velocities than the .44mag, but put more energy on the target... unless you are shooting some really hot hand loaded .44mags

Correct, and excuse my bad wording. And yes, my friend has loaded some impressive .44 rounds:laugh: It's Alot more impressive than my .50:laugh:

Decent gun. Built like a tank. Depending on when it was made there may be issues with recoil springs as well as extractor breaking.
There have been recalls on them. Get the serial number and call or email Magnum Research to see if any apply to that particular gun.
Others are right though after the first couple times to the range it will get old and you'll tire of it.
Can't carry it, can't compete with it, not really a target piece either. Once you shut down the range with your hand cannon and everyone ooohs and ahhhs over it you'll tire of it. Buy a S&W .500. You can target shoot, carry and hunt with it.
Lynn C Thompson owner of Cold Steel knife company is a world authority on hunting with large bore revos.
Search YouTube for him. Some amazing long distance 2-300 yard shots he makes on big african game and they all drop! The gun is ACCURATE!
I've seen a video of him taking a cape buff with one. One shot pop!
Resist the urge. Spend wisely.

I'm with Viper, never had problem 1 with mine. Mine is a original IMI and not the newer Magnum Research. Without a doubt it grabs everyone's attention at the range even if they don't see it, once that trigger is pulled once they know it's there. Personally I say, if you want it and it won't take anything away from your family then get it. You only live once and no one knows for how long.

I have an original 1984 IMI Desert Eagle in .357. Have a few thousand rounds through it and the only isssue was having to replace the firing pin. Regular maintinance, just like any other machine, is required. Due to the size and weight, the recoil is much less than even a 9mm. (for my gun in .357) It is a reliable gun and a fun shooter and you will not be disappointed!!!!!!

thats funny, I just bought a DE 50 about 3 weeks ago for $850 at a local pawn shop. I love the thing so far and dont see it having any issues. If you like to shoot look into reloading, it will pay for itself specially if you own a few large calibers.

First, thanks so much for all the info! Ive been doing some research, and I think I'm going to pull the trigger in the next few paychecks. I'll post pics when I finally get her.

As far as reloading goes, I already reload 12ga and 20ga like it's my job, but I haven't done anything for handguns or rifles. Sounds like Im going to have to make some room in my basement for another loader!
