Do I need a power commander?

No, it is not a NEED, your engine will run safely without it. Your bike will run better with a base map loaded in a power commander from Brocks, and it will run it's best when dyno tuned properly.
The ecu editor does alot more than a power commander too, if you have a dyno tuner close by that tunes with ecu editor that would be your best bet. There's alot of info on this site about it, and here's a link to their homepage.

I just had my bike dyno tuned today. It has a full race exhaust, pc3 and a pc stock map that supposedly matched my configuration.

The results were that the bike had been running lean.
