Don't Close Your Blinds

The other day, my nine year old son wanted to know why we were at war. My
husband looked at our son and then looked at me. My husband and I were in
the Army during the Gulf War and we would be honored to serve and defend our
Country again today. I knew that my husband would give him a good
explanation. My husband thought for a few minutes and then told my son to go
stand in our front living room window.

He said 'Son, stand there and tell me what you see?'

'I see trees and cars and our neighbor's houses,' he replied.

'OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the United
States of America and you are President Bush.'

Our son giggled and said 'OK.'

'Now son, I want you to look out the window and pretend that every house and
yard on this block is a different country' my husband said.

'OK Dad, I'm pretending.'

'Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and pretend you see
Saddam come out of his house with his wife, he has her by the hair and is
hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in the face, he
throws her on the ground, then he starts to kick her to death. Their
children run out and are afraid to stop him, they are screaming and crying,
they are watching this but do nothing because they are kids and they are
afraid of their father. You see all of this, son...what do you do?'

'Dad?'

'What do you do son?'

'I'd call the police, Dad.'

'OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations. They take your call..
They listen to what you know and saw but they refuse to help. What do you do
then son?'

'Dad......... but the police are supposed to help!' My son starts to whine.

'They don't want to, son, because they say that it is not their place or
your place to get involved and that you should stay out of it,' my husband
says.

'But Dad...he killed her!!' my son exclaims.

'I know he did...but the police tell you to stay out of it. Now I want you
to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor who you're
pretending is Saddam turn around and do the same thing to his children'

'Daddy...he kills them?'

'Yes, son, he does. What do you do?'

'Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my next door
neighbor to help me stop him,' our son says.

'Son, our next door neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to get
involved as well.
He refuses to open the door and help you stop him,' my husband says.

'But Dad, I NEED help!!! I can't stop him by myself!!'

'WHAT DO YOU DO SON?' Our son starts to cry.

'OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street saw you ask for
help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands taller and puffs
out his chest. Guess what he does next, son?'

'What Daddy?'

'He walks across the street to the old ladies house and breaks down her door
and drags her out, steals all her stuff and sets her house on fire and
then...he kills her. He turns around and sees you standing in the window and
laughs at you. WHAT DO YOU DO?'

'Daddy..'

'WHAT DO YOU DO?' Our son is crying and he looks down and he whispers, 'I'd
close the blinds, Daddy.'

My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks him. 'Why?'

'Because, Daddy.....the police are supposed to help people who need
them.....and they won't help..... You always say that neighbors are supposed
to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either....they won't help me stop
him.....I'm afraid....I can't do it by myself, Daddy.....I can't look out my
window and just watch him do all these terrible things and, and, do
nothing. So.....I'm just going to close the blinds....
so I can't see what he's doing........and I'm going to pretend that it is
not happening.'

I start to cry. My husband looks at our nine year old son standing in the
window, looking pitiful and ashamed at his answers to my husband's questions
and he says...

'Son'

'Yes, Daddy.'

'Open the blinds because that man.....He's at your front door...'WHAT DO YOU
DO?'

My son looks at his father, anger and defiance in his eyes. He balls up his
tiny fists and looks his father square in the eyes, without hesitation he
says: ' I'D DEFEND MY FAMILY, DAD!! I'M NOT GONNA LET HIM HURT MOMMY OR MY
SISTER, DAD!!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD, I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM!!!!!'

I see a tear roll down my husband's cheek and he grabs our son to his chest
and hugs him tight, and says... ' It's too late to fight him, he's too
strong and he's already at YOUR front door son..... you should have stopped
him BEFORE he killed his wife, and his children and the old lady across the
way. You have to do what's right, even if you have to do it alone, before
its too late,' my husband whispers.

THAT scenario I just gave you is WHY we are at war with Iraq . When good men
stand by and let evil happen, son, THAT is the greatest atrocity in the
world. 'YOU MUST NEVER BE AFRAID TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO DO
IT ALONE!'

BE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! BE PROUD OF OUR TROOPS!! SUPPORT THEM!!! SUPPORT
AMERICA SO THAT IN THE FUTURE OUR CHILDREN WILL NEVER HAVE TO CLOSE THEIR
BLINDS...'

This should be printed in every newspaper and posted in every school in
America . Of course that won't happen so we'll use the Internet. If your
blinds are closed, do nothing with this email.

If they are open I do not need to tell you what to do.

GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!

what a great analogy..

It will incite the liberals to riot, the conservatives to beam and might even wake someone up...

I invented "blinds"
Ted Kennedy.. (what a loss he will be.....not)

Problem with your story is that, when he looked out of the window, it wasn't Saddam that he saw ... it was someone named Osama.

WOW and Next from the library of the brainwashed and the lets ensure we do NOT think for ourselves.... :poke:

Damn folks, "great analogy" really? Remember, I'm not a freaking liberal, but damn, this sorta programmed for a jingoistic knuckle dragging "God and country right or wrong BS" audience is just as harmful if not more so than much of the liberal rhetoric would be. Makes all conservatives look and sound like semi sentient fools plain and simple...

This is patriotism, this isn't what's good for the country and it's sure as hell NOT what's good for the kid in the story... WTF? How can any of you actually say, "Yeah this is great" when you read a description of an alcoholic/substance abusive father mentally abusing both his son and his wife? This little story is an affront this isn't where we are at and beyond that the story is irrelevant in regards to our current political situation.

Don't wrap your heads up in a warm insulative blanket of pre-programmed thought be it from a fairy tale society selling salvation or a political parties flawed rhetoric and BS.

If we could actually manage to think and discuss the world and our country without the filters and influences of religion and party affiliation we could really do some good, NOT just stand around beating some pre packaged thought into the ground and grooming hate, lies, and feelings of superiority to another...

:rant::sasmokin:

And don't forget I served my country, I love our constitution, but to stand around thinking the republican party and George Bush has our best interests in mind is completely naive... These people are no longer connected to reality nor do they care.

Then again the democratic party isn't looking out for us either so it's a matter of picking our evil unfortunately.

In short it is a "dont bury your head in the sand thing" Americans are famous for this... we do not have the poverty or list of other issues you find in other countries.. Heck just hop across the border to MX.. I would bet most US citizens do not have a clue about the country.. you know it is a luxury to have windows with "Glass" in many parts of the country? Running water? yea right.. paved streets? you know that many homes have a power meter where you run an extension cord to the house from?

Sometimes we need to think about getting back to basic "its Us or Them" that made this a great country to start with...

The fact is, the only reason we helped our "neighbors" in Kuwait is because they had oil. The only reason we helped our "neighbors," the people of Iraq is because of their oil. We aren't really helping all the "neighbors" who need our help all the time.

The world is a big place, though, so I don't know if it's possible to help everyone.

But if my neighbor drags his wife out into the street, you can bet I'm gonna get my fists dirty.

hate to ring this bell but we "are" an energy based economy.. we loose our oil, we loose it all..

I do think we do much better when the country's we get our oil from are run by dictators.. then we only have to keep one person happy.. (and it is cheaper to make one person rich).. would be nice if we had some help doing the right things for the wrong reasons....

Sheez, the man prints a nice little read and you guys crap all over it... What so wrong in thinking we are fighting for a just cause, just like we have done many times through out history.

it is not always PC... or it sounds like propaganda... the thing is, the masses respond to propaganda whether it is right or wrong..

I feel that you can take any paragraph and label it "words worth fighting for" or "propaganda" just a mater of where and how you are looking at it..

I do find any words that invoke a response are something of an art form..

"When good men

world. 'you must never be afraid to do what is right even if you have to do

Unfortunately the United States has a wonderfully long track record of standing by and letting evil happen.
Armenian genocide 1915-1918, America stood by
Cambodia's Pol Pot regime 1975-1979
Rwanda 1994
guatemala 1982
Darfur
Its not that I hate living in this country, but like Revlis pointed out its a lame story full of stupid patriotism.
whats next? some lame hack of a song from Kid Rock?

Now Ranger,
I am not saying being part of the military was wasted, nor was it any less commendable. And who smokes weed anymore, that was so 1990's.
whatever though, back to more sweet stories about Sadam being our neighbor and beating up kittens and crap like that....

Rats, my 21 patriotic years in the service was for nothing, I could have been smoking weed and enjoying life instead.....:poke:
 there is no good ground here to stand on.. you got one guy calling it propaganda, another "stupid patriotism" and then comes right back and criticizes us for NOT doing something...

If the US stands up for someones rights or if we let them fall, we get bashed from inside... never fails.. bad motives, too slow to act, not enough done, did too much... take your pick..

There was a time when people stood behind their country despite its every action.. We do not always know the motive behind an action..

hell we did not want to stop Hitler for gods sake because it did not directly affect us..

Hitler said hands off the US.. Japan screwed that up and we got in the war.. (then we locked up Japaneses citizens)..

however had we waited, and the Germans took England, we were screwed.. no place to set up a war effort..

So we did a terrible thing locking up the Japanese.. some would contend we should be condemned for this.. Fact is we probably locked up a lot of innocent people.. but we probably also locked up some that were not.. (Japanese admit this fact)

so anyway... still makes for a fun read and you know that someone is going to get their toes stepped on..
