Was checking out a Y2K Ducati 996,serious
drool factor with a mega price tag [about
16,500 US]. Was wondering what you folks
thought about the 996 say vs,say, the new 929
Honda [at about $9990],lighter and more
powerful, the RC51, or the Yami RF1. Are you
paying $ for style?

My new DucAbuser RC51 will kick it's 996 *** all the way back to Milan, and still leave me enough money to visit Maui a couple of times.

RC51 just try to find one available, looks like one per dealer.

Konrad,
What you pay for is a finished design. Form and Function. These bikes handle like their on rails, never miss a beat and are really beautiful to look at. Like all great Italian art, you pay more and you get more value. This is not a race bike, nor is it a everyday transpo bike. This is high performance art. IMHO

What would be the prob. using the 996
for everyday transportation? [less than half hour ride in lite traffic] Are they unreliable? or is it that heavy clutch?

You would be surprised how good a low HP Duc will keep up with any bike at Willow Springs or any track. Unless you have owned one, you would not understand.

Konrad if you are looking for a v-twin take a good look at the Aprilia Mille R model it is targeted at the 996SPS. The R is a limited production solo seat bike with Ohlins front and back along with carbon fiber pieces.

Ducmanic don't take me the wrong way I love Ducati's.It's just that there are other bikes to look at in the year 2000. Foggarty set an Isle of Man lap record on a Yamaha OWO1, he could win on anything he rides. Doug Poulen had many a good year aboard a Ducati and promoted the brand to their present status with Ferracci's assistance.

Konrad,
A 30 minute commute in trafic is fine for the 996. I rode ducati's for daily transpo for 12 years on the street, and cleaned up at the strip and at Willow Track Days also - What i mean is you may not want to use the bike for this. I buy bikes and use them-
Guess you do also-

Yup, I use them.. Am riding a '99 BMW R1100S
[Y2k Busa on order] and is a very nice bike
a little top heavy,not real fast,somewhat
pedestrian, though very solid and well made.
It just don't light that old fire.
