Dyno?

Can someone please explain to me what the dyno is used for? I'm new to this stuff, so I apologize if this has been addressed before.

Usually, a Dyno is used to measure a bike's performance and/or tune it. The Dyno is like a treadmill for a bike; your bike can be run up for a variety of reasons and you'll be given info on Peak Horsepower and Tq.

Another use is to allow for mechanics to adjust the air/fuel mixture through the carbs, or fuel injection map. This will ensure that your engine is operating at its most efficient settings. This is done by analyzing the emmissions from the exhaust...sort of hard to do out on the street.

Hope this helps

Ok...this is my dilema...I'm looking into putting some new pipes on my busa, and the dealership is trying to charge me $100 to put it on the dyno, when the Harley dealership (where the suzuki dealership is going to take my bike, b/c they have the only dyno in town) charges only $35. So, my question is...can I just have the dealership install the new pipes, and take it to the harley spot myself?

Depends if you are putting it on the dyno to tune it or just to get numbers and who you trust.

BTW if you go to the hardley shop make sure they strap the back down. The hardley shop I went to wasnt used to running stuff with this much hp and weighing 300lbs less than their "normal" bikes and are usually clueless about stapping the thing down. I think they figured it out when my bike started spinning the tire and hopping. Also watch the dyno operators eyes get wide when they see the numbers come up
