EK master links, rivet vs screw?

How come there isn’t more talk about the screw type master links from EK? I’ve always seen people say to stay away from them, but no reason why.

With that being said both of my masters in my chain are rivets
I would say there is more of a chance the screw could back out at some point.....

and I would also say the screw type wouldn't be used for any race track which kind of puts it out of mainstream use

I bought this last year and yes it’s very expensive for what it is but holy crap it works like nothing else on the market. Did my rivets perfect and perfect size with little effort. It didn’t feel like it was going to break or be hard on my hands. It’s meant to last and is worth the money.

This has been discussed many times. The overwhelming majority say rivets the only way to go. I prefer snap in clips on chain masters. Most slam them as not as strong yet we use them in the industrial setting for all kinds of high hp and high speed applications with no issues. Motors that spin way fast and have way more power and torque than any bike ever dreamed of having. Never had any issues with them breaking or anything else. Just my 2 cents.

I used clip masters on my drag quad 520 chain. It weights 430ish lbs and makes a little over 120hp. I know saying snap on clips in the motorcycle world is grounds for extermination tho lol

That’s the one I use too. Every once in a while you can snap one up for $85 on sale somewhwre

I've never used the screw type master link, but EK makes excellent chains so I can't see them putting out a sub standard product.
I'd use them without hesitation.

cheers

It looks as though they "mushroom" from the screw so act much like a rivet with a nut?

I agree EK is a world leader in chains and wouldn't sell something that isn't quality...

I've used the clip style fasteners before with zero issues...I had one on my old FZR1000 and although it didn't out out power like a modern bike, it put out enough.....

So for fun I tired the screw type cuz my local cycle gear had one in stock.

And it’s poop.

And not like poop, like spicy food diarrhea on a first date at the hot girls place after she finally invited you upstairs, poop.

The directions are unclear and operation is iffy. Basically you screw the caps on to press the side plate over the pins the screw then down alternating, but not too tight cuz they could strip, but tight enough that they won’t turn anymore. They advise 60* turns each time. So I turned each one 45* ish because I break things easy and really wanted this to work. The pins snapped off before they got tight the master link is noticeably wider than the rest of the chain but according to the directions it’s seated down far enough to run. I don’t trust it and will be cutting it off today lol.

The search begins for a clip link both 530 and 520. Whose got a link lol

About a year ago I threw out 3 EK clip links because I thought I'd never have a use for them....

Hindsight is 20/20

I've seen clips come off 30 and 40hp 4wheelers/atvs, and do some nice case damage.
Years ago I was on my gen2 behind a friend on his 636, when it spit the clip master-link.
The chain shot straight towards me, fortunately I just moved over about a foot avoiding a bump I knew was coming.
It happened so fast I wouldn't have been able to avoid it otherwise, I wasn't even quite sure that's what happened at that point.
It shot past me straight out like a spear, about 3' off the ground, and we found it laying straight out in the road.
We were going around 100mph.
But, fortunately no damage, and we were only a few miles from his house, and even had another master link there, so no big deal.
Had the chain hit the engine case, or my bike, things could have gotten expensive.
I just did yet another rivot master link a week ago.
It's a 2 minute job, put it on, crank the press on each pin, measure, done.
I prefer a rivot master link for any sportbike for this reason.
The peace of mind knowing that it should Not come off, and if it does...that it's your own fault, lol

Although I wouldn't use a clip connector now, back in the day each and every new chain came with one and almost everyone was running one including myself at times...

Fortunately I've never had one come off thankfully.....
