Ever have something fall off your bike?

Was taking the exit to go to work yesterday, and when down shifting my foot gave way and scared the hell outta me. Turned out it my shift lever bolt had vibrated loose and came out. Although I had it fixed in no time, it got me thinking. I'd never checked for loose bolts, and my milage is getting up there.

Question: Are there any bolts that I should "always" check for safty reasons?

Yeah, all of em'

Specifically, Controls, brakes, wheels, cables.

But seriously I go around Lilah once a quarter or so and thump her here and there to check for anything loose or rattling. Soft rubber mallet will reveal most anything loose. I also check fasteners while cleaning, or while bored.

It's important and should be part of your pre-ride inspection. Touch and thump everything, just like a pilot. Similar to a pilot and the plane, if something rattles loose on your Busa it could be fatal.

No Shid.

I bought a bag of the differant size plastic push pins.. those things are allways falling out

Great idea with the rubber mallet.. I try to keep tabs on every thing but a good thump`n couldn't hurt.

That damn shift lever has fallen off on me a couple times before I put some Loctite on it.

Rubber Mallet (SOFT) or just the palm of your hand... Thump! If you hear a Bzzz, or tingling, or anything other than THUD, check for something loose.

Same thing happened to me! Scared the h*** out of me!

Are you running the stock footpegs? Mine came loose on me about a week ago though not entirely off. My bike suddenly wouldn't shift into first gear and I found that with my Buell pegs I had lowered the shifter so far that I was out of range on the linkage rod and the locknut was also loose. I made myself a custom 10mm box end to tighten up the aft lock nut while I am out and about. In the shop it is easier to just get out the snap ring pliers and pull the shifter.

But I am in full agreeance with Revlis here. Check every one of em all the time. I have safety wired the brake caliper bolts and the front axle pinch bolts and I am going to get to what ever else I can here shortly to be certain.

i heard we should locktite the lever straight from the factory. reminds me to do mine.

Yup, just happened to me today. One stop sign from work. Jumped off, and quickly threaded it back on and finished my ride to work. Drove it back to our maintenance department at lunch and Loctited it back on.

Kind of a creepy feeling, looking down and not seeing a shift lever. First thing I though was how far over I must have been on that last corner to hit my shift lever.

You know how on the old carb bikes you could hit the kill switch and twist the throttle a couple of times and then put kill back on while going down the road it would make a huge backfire?

?? Well make sure your exhaust can is tight if you try this at home. It shot mine off the end only about a foot or so but going down the road at 35 it was rolling around and hot as hell when you run back to pick it up and stick it back on the bike. LOL Hey I was young and foolish OK younger and more foolish.............................

Locktite it is. I think I still have some blue laying around somewhere. Thanks guys.

Heard of that on the 04 or 05 models I think. Doesnt sound fun.
