Did a search and didn't find any DIY on what panels to remove to gain access to the headlight assembly....

Advice before I tear into the bike?

thanks
rick

Actually, I did the whole mod (Hi and Low) by removing the two upper dash panels and the gauge cluster...

It will depend on the kit you have though; whether it is plug and play or you have to splice in...

i too would like to change my lights. any chance i could get a better discription on how you guys did it. I looked over the repair manual and i cant find the section that describes the way the above posters claim.

Not sure what you are asking here, we are talking about upgrading from stock bulbs to HID; if you want to change the stock bulbs, you can just remove the nose pan and replace the bulbs from underneath...

But the HID mod will not be in the manual...

Ok maybee, i should be a little more detailed, the original poster was asking EXACTLY what pannels are needed to perform a HID swap, i realize that the manual wont show a Modifacation.

So i read that you remove the 2 upper dash panels and then the cluster. im asking if someone could give a better discription on removing these panels(which ones) and the cluster. I have not took apart that part of my bike yet and it sure would help. Thanks-Robert

That part is in the manual actually, but start by removing the pushpins (1 on each side) from just below the side mirrors and then the allen bolt at the center underneath the gauge cluster. This will allow you to remove the gauge panels. Then remove the 2 bolts at the bottom of the gauge cluster and with a slight tug you can remove the cluster. Don't pull too hard because it is attached to a wire harness. Once you disconnect that harness you have access to the entire front part of the bike. Then you can replace the bulbs and attach the ballasts to the RAM air tubee. Not hard a tall.

Sir BigBS pretty much says it all!

I went with a different approach though and instead removed the entire front headlight/fairing assembly as one piece so give me the space to work.

here's what I did:

1) Remove upper plastic instrument panels with the plastic retainer bolts.
2) Remove 3 hex screws on each side of the front fairing
3) Remove 4 plastic retainer bolts under the front tire (push in the middle and pop out)

4) Remove the 8mm hex bolts holding the mirrors (2 per side)
5) Now just slide the fairing off the metal mirrors brakets and the entire front clips slides off the car.

Unplug the harness on the left side and just set the entire thing on a work table. I used a towel to prevent scraches.

Since I was only replacing the 9005 high beam this was a cinch. The bulb was plug and play. For the ballast/igniter, I stripped the power/ground wires and y-tapped into the original high beam harness. I then soldered the wires and taped them up. I did NOT cut off the stock connector so at any time I can simply plug the stock bulb back into the harness

I used a few tie wraps and neatly tied away the wiring and out of the ram ducts before putting it all back together. I also took this opportunity to replace the 1156 amber turn signal bulbs with "Silvervisions" from my car modding parts. Now they look totally clear when off but blink amber when on

The result is stunning looks and a much cleaner front end at night. I have yet to take this baby for a night spin so will have to wait to report back.

Stupid question time. I just ordered the Xentec plug & play HID conversion, but the instructions do not say which bulb is low beam, the H7, or 9005. Please help...

I did mine the never look back method.

Removed the front nose and cut off the connectors and made my own wiring harness using molex connectors (the same as the power connector for your ide hard drive).

I saved the connectors in case I need to go stock but I doubt I will ever go back.

The HID's are a world of difference. I have mine aimed a little low. It illuminates the road about 40 feet ahead with a bright white shower of light. I can up the beam a little bit and make it illuminate 90-100 feet ahead just fine. I just don't want to blind oncoming traffic.

The high beams are insane. I can see a mile down the road easy in a pitch black road. Turn the lights a few degrees to the right and they become pig spotters. The tutorial talks about aiming it slightly to the right to prevent blinding oncoming traffic but I once I hit the high beams......Everyone, everywhere is lit up with blinding light.

I even get blinded by the road signs reflecting the light back. LOL It's toooooooo bright. I turn it on to show off to my friends how bright it is....

Mostly I rely on my low beams except when doing nice races where there's no lights on a 7 mile straightaway. The high beams come in really handy then.

There's no better feeling then frying the retna's of a pork trying to laser me at 3am thinking he's well secluded in the darkness.

thanks guys, i did some 6k's in the low beam and left the stock high beam., Its like riding in High Definition now at night, I could see how the high beam might make my next upgrade list as i do allot of night riding.

Seriously, I d leave the high beam alone or consider a 4000K.

The 6000K in the low beam is so brilliant that it can "Wash Out" certain portions of the Color Spectrum, like Brown.

The less brilliant 4000K has a yellowish tinge to it which will actually enhance the ability to see browns.

Conincidentally, a great deal of Wildlife and Live stock, are in fact, brown.

I feel you, i can still see my stock high beam past my HID now and it now appears yellow to brown. Im looking for distance at this point as if your moving along a dark road a good pace the further i can se the more confident i am.

Looking at the 8k for the high beam.... any one want to share their HID experience feel free to chime in.

Lots use the 8k for their low beam due to it has a bluish/purplish tint to it. Making it better for cars to see you during the day. Some put 8k in high and 6k in low and run high beam during day to be seen better.

Yellow tinted glasses are often used for lots of things such as firing a gun and such. Reason? It easier to spot/focus on something. like said 4k glows yellowish.

Good luck on what you decide to do.

I just upgraded my HID's from the 35 watt system to the 55, holy hell Batman, my low beam lights up 3/4 of a city block, and buckle up; the hi's blast, i'd have to say a good mile, seriously, a mile down the e-way. I run 6k in lo & 8K in hi's. And oh, by the way, the blueish tint u get with 6k's, say bye-bye to that. Nasty beaming white!!! And the purplish hue in the hi's; kinda stuck between a light tint of purple and a brilliant blue!!!!
