our bikes will compensate somewhat for the airflow gain from a full system. However, they run a bit lean from factory so it may not be a good idea to run the bike a lot that way.
Will someone please show me there burnt down leaned out blown FI engine, that got that way suddenly and only because of a full exhaust and air filter?
The gen2 doesn't seem to have the idle issues the gen1 does, and most likely because of it's O2 sensor.
Base fuel maps sometimes correct idle problems, but not always, and I've never been impressed with a power commander base map anyway(Nothing wrong with power commander, and there are better tuning devices now too). If you want your bike right after adding exhaust, have a good tuner tune it on a dyno, or just ride it.
Check your sparkplugs if you think your engine is dangerously lean. Ask a trustworthy(that just doesn't want your money)reputable tuner if adding exhaust is going to burn down your engine. Will your bike run better tuned? Of course! Is it something that has to be done or risk destroying your engine? No!
If anyone disagrees that's fine too, but riding it just a little then is a terrible way to think, assuming you already belive you're harming the engine. That's the same thought process as riding it low on oil won't hurt it...if you ride it just a little. Hopefully we all know that always ends bad.
I encourage anyone that can have there bike properly tuned to do so, and those that can't, not to worry about it. It's becoming more common knowledge that a tune is pretty useless for the money for just slipons. Does anyone really belive that there is that much difference in flow from an aftermarket header then? Yes, they are a great improvement, but not dramatic enough to cause engine damage.
Myself and many peolpe I ride with have always let the tune be last thing we've done to any bike(personal preferences) the plugs have always looked good, the engines look great inside countless miles later without any ill effects, and they run smooth and strong.
Tune when you can, don't worry in the meantime. The myth of tune or else needs to die! Again, someone please show me how your engine leaned out and burned down when you added a full exhaust. I'm not saying it didn't have flat spots in the power curve, or wasn't as responsive as you'de prefer, just that your engine was ruined or had it's life dramatically shortened because of an exhaust. Anyone? Anyone at all?
