Extended Warranties?

I got a three year extended warranty [beyond the 1 year standard, total 48 months], [bumper to bumper]for $395 from the Fun Bike Center in San Diego, CA. I have no idea what effect it might have on resale value, presumably some. Seemed like a great deal on a first-year model bike -- we have heard of at least one cracked subframe, and some defects [e.g., cracks] may not be found for over a year. PS. It's transferable, and bears a 0% deductible.

Did anyone get the extended warranty on their Bus? Does it help resale value like my dealer said? Is it really transferable? I believe there is a year standard warranty on the bike so it's doubtful if anyone has used it yet, but I'll ask the question anyway. Is it worth the money. Is it still in effect if you change the pipes/fuel mapping, etc.

I know that the standard warranty is transferable. I bought a slightly used 97 GSXR750 and the standard warranty covered a problem with some factory misapplied graphics. I received brand new fairing panels for the right side and tail section (about $600 worth of plastic) :).

Can I draw the conclusion that very few of you bought the extended warranty? Probably the reason is that you want to modify your bikes. I'm sure a non-stock pipe voids the warranty.
Does anybody think extended warranties are a good/bad idea?

In 97 I bought a new GSXR 750. I got the 4 year extended warranty. It is transferable (I believe the new owner pays $25 or $35 for the transfer). I am good friends with the shop owner where I purchased the bike. We talked about the coverage when I traded the GSXR in. He said basically "If you had a warranty issue that was suspect, I would contact Suzuki myself and plead your case for you". I had put a pipe, jet kit, etc. on the bike. He said that they (Suzuki)are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to warranty related repairs. I never had to use mine, but it definitely increases the resale value. Sure beats the hell out of Sold As Is on a used bike. I guess it would also depend on your relationship with your local dealer. I've traded-bought my last 3 bikes with this dealer. I'll do all my new bike purchases thru him even if I can save a few bucks elsewhere. My 2 pennies.

I purchased an extended warranty through Suzuki for my new 95 RF900R and I was able to transfer it with no cost and no problem. I also had the option of returning it with a prorated dollar amount to be returned. The dealer that sold me my Hayabusa said I had through the Original Manufacturers warranty to decide if I wanted to purchase one. I used to work for an extended warranty company and it is my beleif that some are good and some are bad. It mostly depends on the price. If you weigh what the waranty costs against what a repair could cost then it makes it worth while. Plus this is a new model and with almost every first year model there are quirks. I would suggest buying the warranty but not until the Factory one is almost up. That way if you want to trade the Hayabusa in on next years model you can without a loss.

I didn't get the extended warranty, but have heard more than once that the extended warranty can be purchased at any point during the period covered by the default one year warranty. My plan is to see how I feel around the end of that first year (and see how rich I feel at the time).

terra1, where in San Diego? I bought mine in Escondido, North County.

My feeling about extended warranties has always been, if the product needs the warranty because it breaks down a lot, I don't want the product. If it runs well then why buy the warranty. That view has evolved before motorcycle. Truthfully I don't think the Bus needs the warranty beyond the standard first year. Yes, I've read the posts in the Manufacturer's Forum. Also if I put pipes, a power commander, K&N filter, air box mods, etc on it, will the warranty be void.

What do you guys think? The dealer is talking about $500 here, price of a nice helmet or 50 cases of beer.

As I said before I use to be a third party administrator for Extended Warranties so I am very knowlegeable in this area. The warranty is a good deal if you plan to keep the bike for 3 or more years. Plus it is a first year bike which many times presents problems as we have seen. Call around to many dealers even out of state. I'm sure you can find a better deal than $500 if you want I will give you my dealers number and you can talk to him. He might be able to sell you one. On the modification issue.... if the problem arises because of the pipe, jetkit etc. then the warranty will not cover it but if it is something like the trans which would not be affected by these mods then that would be covered. Plus if you are in good with your service guy he can help you out. A case of beer always goes a long way. Remember though don't buy one until right before the original factory warranty runs out which is one year. That way you can see if you plan to keep the bike or if it has any problems after one year.

The paperwork I got with my bike said the extended warranty, which is from Suzuki, not some warranty insurance policy, can be purchased any time during the first year of ownership.

My dealer asked me about the service history on my previous sportbike (Honda CBR1000F) and pointed out how the extended warranty would probably pay for itself. It was a convincing argument and I bought it.

Just thinking about paying the repair bill for the damage done by a broken cam chain, after the first year of ownership - guarantees that I'll be purchasing the extension.

I purchased the extended warranty from the dealer, I believe it was four years beyond the first one year for a total of five. It was $695 painful dollars, but I got it. Mostly for many of the reasons Porky pointed out. However, the one thing that seems to be different on mine from everyone else's here that I have read, is that mine is not transferable to someone else. They said I could transfer it to another bike if I traded in the Busa (like that's going to happen).

I bought mine Busa in Nebraska, maybe that's why the extended warranty is more expensive. The bike itself was $10,500. Maybe the dealer had to try and make some money somewhere. Just a guess.

there is something wrong here........the warranty should be transferable. your salesman is giving you wrong information all major bike dealers offer this.

Warranty - here is a legitimate gripe.

In the UK you busa owners get a 2year warranty standard.

Here in the USA, the largest market we get 1 year and the option to buy an extended transferable warranty.

Maybe it is political but I wish someone could tell me why the double standard.
DOT or the US judicial system at work again?
