Flashing the ECU - The Will...And The Way?

I'm sold on ECU 'flashing' as my method of choice for modifying my Busa's A/F tables. With that said, I feel like a man who's finally made the monumental choice to travel to the moon--now all that's left to do is line up the minor detail of how, precisely, to get there.

I'm aware of Smithabusa's hardware interface (which would be my choice for this) and PetriK's software. But almost everything else surrounding these things appears to either be missing, or not readily available. There are scant tid-bits of information--on this site and others--but reading these threads is like listening to a phone conversation for which one half can at best be inferred.

Frankly, for 8 bucks a month someone could establish a board similar to this one, and provide a centralized point of discussion and support for Busa ECU flashing, including a library of indexed, ECU maps (assuming other 'users' would be willing to upload their maps). (For those who haven't done ECU flashing before, it's customary to locate a map configuration similar to your bike's, and start with that as your 'base' map. For example, exhaust, intake, engine mods, etc., are all factored into the map's content, and included in its definition, for easy reference.)

My (probably) naive question is: Why hasn't an organized site such as I've described happened yet? Or has it, and I've just overlooked it?

Thanks for your thoughts...

alan

I'd be happy to if either of them would use it to establish such a site. You could send your 8 bucks, too, and we'd have twice the bandwidth... :beerchug:

good idea..why dont you send your 8$ a month to petrik and smith a busa:thumbsup:

+ 1000.................. Personally haven't had any question or problem even way back in the early days that wasn't answered or sorted well within 24 Hrs

As for scant tit bits ............... think there is 26 pages in one string on here and then there is the hacking forum site .............. if one does a complete read not much goes unanswered.

OB_Boss, I've read the threads, here, and elsewhere. Visited the 'hacking' forum, too. My experience of all of this is that trying to locate answers to one's own particular question is awkward, to say the least. Certainly I could send an e-mail to Smithabusa, or PetriK whenever I had a question that wasn't answered in the 'literature'. But I generally have a lot of questions when I start a new endeavor. I really hate the thought of bothering these two with every one that comes along. It seems an odd way to do things, too, when a simple 'FAQ', and a list of maps would probably answer most of a new user's questions.

For the record, I am planning to purchase Smithabusa's interface. And I've already downloaded PetriK's software (which I, along with many others no doubt, would be glad to support monetarily).

All I'm saying is, in light of what's available in support of the endeavor (ECU flashiing), there's got to be a better way...that's all.

The ecu hack forum has a whole forum dedicated solely to the genII flashing. So another forum would only serve to devide and scatter info. Its kinda like all the hayabusa forums...imagine how much easier it would be to find what your looking for if all the information scattered between all the different busa sites was all in one site instead. As far as maps go, you can access any maps that others have made using the softwares "map share" function, so thats taken care of as well, although I do admit it would be much easier if they would just post them on the forum. All the needed info is already out there bro. That being said, have you downloaded all the instructional videos that Greg(smithbusa) has posted here and on the hack forum? If not, you should...they'll show you just how easy it is to hook up and use and you shouldnt feel awkward emailing greg, he's really a great guy and loves to help out his fellow busa enthusiests. I communicated through email with him constantly for several weeks proir to finally getting the interface for my gen1 and he never once gave me the cold shoulder...and I'm a very inquisitive person myself when it comes to making purchases. Anyway, good luck with your intell gathering.:beerchug:

AlanS ............... no probs alls good
Venture forth with out hesitation as you will find any question you have will be answered fully by many and in no way will you be left floundering at any stage. It's a great site ........... with an abundance of information gathered and shared from a world wide variety of experiences.

I find the topic very intriguing but difficult to follow as well. I may spend the time and money this winter however. IF I DO - it will be cheaper than most of my many previous years winter mods...

I understand what your saying. It is tough to read hrough all of the many lenghty threads. The threads aren't organized well and like you said, it's similar to a phone conversation. The best bet is to talk with other people who have done some flashing already. It's very difficult to stay on top of any new/changes being developed/designed. It would be great if someone took up the cause and truly organized and traked the progress of any actions, questions, and answers. Once a complete program management process is implimented and brought up to speed it probably wouldn't take more than a few hours of each day to keep the progress current. Anyone with a good PMP background could take charge of this.

In the mean time your best hope is to simply start independant threads for each questions and get the anwers from other members.

People are overthinking this whole process like its a trip to the moon.???

Hardware: buy it from Smithabusa

Installation Instructions: Download videos from Smithabusas site.

Software: download it from Petriks site

Tuning: A) find a reputable tuner who does it, or B) get a datalogger and do it yourself, or C) wait for a reputable set of maps to become available. At this point C is a ways off.

There really is nothing more to know...

Just to name one grey area, I'm still trying to understand the what effect the change in dwell may have. I understand the concept but I haven't heard if it works according to the concept. A few have tried it and made adjustments to the ignition timming in line with this change but the results haven't been clear which meant that most reverted back to the OE dwel setting. ???

yeah leave ignition dwell at stock Commuta.

I have a bunch of info on my site as well as videos, not sure what else to do. Most of the questions people call me wanting to know are just how hard is it to hook up to their computer, who will tune it, how do i tune it. If you are clueless on how to tune an engine, flashing, power commander, bazzaz you will have the same issues with all. Taking it to a reputable tuner is always the best thing to do. I always answer emails and will do anything i can to help. Call me and ask whatever you like and ill try and document and start a FAQ if you want, but most of the things i can think off the top of my head are already covered on my site, videos, or on the ecu hack forum (tons of info there).

In case you haven't seen the gen 1 videos i originally made, they cover how to make fuel / ignition changes etc, they basically go through almost everything you can do.

+1 Everything you need to know is right there and also a +1 to gregs first post.....tuning is tuning and the basic concept is the same as for any other tuning system. add fuel, take away fuel...add timing, take away timing...blah blah blah. Dont read into the features you're not gonna use anyway. If you're only looking at ecu edit as a cheap alternative to a power commander than changing fuel settings is all you started out wanting to do anyway...right? I mean, thats all you're gonna be capable of doing with a power commander in base form anyway so just worry about that to start with and try not to get overwhelmed with the HUGE amount of extra stuff that ecu edit can do.

Draco hits it with the simplicity side - I had previously thought of same solutions for hardware and software. I'd think of nothing less than supporting our folks that slaved over this and continue to support Dave O.

It is the tuning part I struggle with (even previous investments in custom maps (3) I drove several hours round trip for the finished product.)

Another alternative is to send my ecu's to Greg or (RR real name escapes me) to bump the rev limiter and fuel cuts. There is a local that has the equip who suggests I bring mine in for a tweak too; Hardware, firmware and software acquired from our industrious Friends too!!! He says he would need to do it on the bench (I know what that implies; i think (no af tuning at a min)) I want to know enough before I take it to him that I can reflash (them) back to stock. (I have two 08's that both need the above deeds; although both already have a top speed work around. Both have pc3's diff maps and aftermarket exhausts.) FUN Stuff!!!!

brother, flashing back to stock is as simple as clicking"new map" and hitting the flash button. have u downloaded the ecuedit software? one look at it and you'll realize just how simple it all is. ;)
