I really appreciate you sharing this! I've been tracking this bill for a while, but this is the view from the inside. While it is clear the bill is not going to pass in it's current form, it is also apparent there are certain individuals in power who are determined to find a way to impose stiff penalties on bikers one way or another and I don't believe we've heard that last of this.
Write to these representatives everyone! We have the opportunity to head this situation off at the pass. If it passed it would be so much more painful to try to fight it after the fact. It's not necessary to write a book, just be clear, reasonable and be careful to keep the tone professional and avoid spelling and grammar errors. We have to make it clear the motorcycling community IS paying attention and we will not support individuals who support legislation that is blatantly discriminatory and unconstitutional.
This is the kind of thing that turns normally law abiding citizens into criminals. Sure you always have a choice, but the factors you take into consideration always affect the decision made. It's basic common sense. Today, if I'm speeding and I see lights, I pull over because a speeding ticket is much better than police evasion charges. If the consequences of the ticket could become just as bad as the evasion charges, what's the difference? Answer: if you run, you have a chance for NO PENALTIES.
Most of the riders out stunting and speeding more than 50 over weren't going to stop anyway, so they don't adjust their behavior at all!
